Mention of a trade name or company in this publication does not imply endorsement of any product or company by the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia... Overall, 60-70 per cent of flour is used in traditional flat breads, 20-25 per cent of flour is used in western style breads and 5-10 per cent is used in cakes and biscuits... In summary, canola varieties sown 2-3 weeks earlier than normal (early to mid April) can be grazed in winter prior to bud elongation (usually providing 600-800 dse grazing days/ha) and recover with no impact on yield or oil...

Developing revolutionary farming systems aimed at boosting returns to livestock and cropping, and minimising the impact of drought and climate change while restoring a healthy landscape, is the goal of the new Future Farm Industries Cooperative Research Centre (FFI CRC)... The CRC will operate with $114 million in funding and resources: $34 million from the Australian Government and $80 million in cash and resources, such as facilities and staff, from industry supporters... CEO-designate Kevin Goss says these technologies are already well advanced in some areas, following work by the CRC for Plant-based Management of Dryland Salinity: "We're now taking that work a giant step further and turning it into a new approach to farming."..

Until such varieties are released, northern growers and advisers need to select varieties firstly on the basis of crown rot risk and then manage for stripe rust ... There is a risk of WSMV being spread through infected seed into new areas... We have not been able to determine an economic threshold for RGB in sorghum from these trials...

There is only an extremely small risk of WSMV being spread through seed... Wider row spacings and higher plant populations will result in a more even and shorter flowering period and harvest, due to reduced tillering (Thomas et al 1980)... It is highly likely that plant population should be somewhere in the range 100 to 150 plants/m 2...

Wheat curl mite (WCM) is a vector of wheat streak mosaic virus and a new website has been established to help growers better understand this pest Growers in areas prone to wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV) are being encouraged to use the website www.wheatcurlmite.org as a one-stop-shop for information on the pest and to help researchers with tracking outbreaks... Launched earlier this year and funded by the GRDC, the website was created by the Centre for Environmental Stress and Adaption Research (CESAR) as an online repository for facts and management guidelines concerning WSMV and its vector, the wheat curl mite... Wheat curl mites colonise the youngest tissue of a wheat plant and acquire WSMV when feeding on infected plants, and then carry it to other plants...

A reliable, accurate and sensitive RT-PCR test for detecting Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV) in bulk samples of wheat seed was successfully developed, validated in blind studies and made available to the agricultural industry through AGWEST Plant laboratories for use in testing seed stocks... The three main ways to combat WSMV are to 1) destroy the green bridge before sowing to prevent transmission of the virus by the WCM, 2) use wheat seed stocks that have either none or only low levels of the virus, and 3) to sow crops late when temperature conditions are non-conducive for WCM... In an early seed transmission experiment, WSMV was detected by RT-PCR in seedlings nine days after sowing and the number of positive seedlings increased considerably over the following six weeks until almost all batches tested positive...

Use of the test may also help to prevent wheat breeders sowing infected seed stocks... Use of the test confirmed widespread occurrence of WSMV in the WA grainbelt and identified the disease for the first time in Tasmania... The research also showed that Australian WSMV isolates represent a single incursion from overseas and the virus has been present in Australia for at least 15 years...
