Spraying to manage aphid infestations in the northern region does not guarantee increased yields.. Research is beginning to show that controlling aphids may not necessarily lead to higher yields or prevent the spread of viruses... While aphids can transmit damaging viruses to faba beans, trying to control virus transmission by spraying for aphids is likely to be of little use in preventing the spread of non-persistently transmitted viruses, such as bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV)...

In a survey of 134 paddocks across the northern grains region during 2003-06, we found that 41% of sunflower crops were sown into a long fallow following a winter cereal (wheat or barley), 25% of crops were sown into a short fallow following sorghum, and just 13% were double cropped into wheat or barley stubble (L Serafin and S Belfield, unpublished)... Further trial work is needed to provide additional data to develop our understanding of the full impacts of sulfur nutrition... The results suggest that sunflower oil contents may be more specifically targeted and fertiliser N inputs more accurately determined for optimum profitability...

Image of the Harrington Seed Destructor.. De Bruin Engineering's Harrington Seed Destructor (HSD), designed and manufactured in Australia, has been recognised on the world stage, winning the 2015 Edison Award in the US in the 'Smart Agriculture' category... Key findings include: 69 per cent of surveyed growers use a combination of methods to pick the right time to sell, while 31 per cent take the price on offer; women are more willing to try new approaches (42 per cent of women versus 38 per cent of men) and they are also more likely to adjust practices in response to the market (64 per cent versus 60 per cent); and 69 per cent of growers say maximising production and quality is the most important profitability driver; 31 per cent say managing costs is most important...

Livingston is one of few varieties that has moderate tolerance to root lesion nematodes (RLN), along with other desirable features... The researchers concluded that where Pt combines with high levels of crown rot (a common scenario), yield losses can be exacerbated if varieties are susceptible to Pt. Instead of a 10 per cent yield loss from Pt in a susceptible variety it could be 30 to 50 per cent if crown rot is combined with a Pt-intolerant variety...

The world's third case of glyphosate-resistant liverseed grass has been confirmed in northern New South Wales, seven years after the first two cases were confirmed from east of Moree, NSW... Tony Cook, weeds specialist with the NSW Department of Primary Industries, says that while it is only the third confirmed case of glyphosate-resistant liverseed grass in seven years, it comes from a new area and has a much higher level of resistance than previous populations... Mr Cook says imazapic can be used in summer fallow as a residual herbicide to control multiple weed germinations and then be followed by a winter crop of chickpeas or imidazolinone-tolerant barley...
