Farmers throughout southern Australia continue to seek improved conservation farming strategies, including increased levels of residue retention, reduced soil disturbance, and greater rotation diversity... CSIRO has been monitoring changes in the water balance on the trial since then, and so far we have demonstrated that early crop termination (as part of a cover cropping practice) can increase the risk of dryland salinity under some situations... Increased levels of residue retention have had little impact on the water balance in the short term (6 years), and so farmers can adopt this practice confident that there will be no negative short-term environmental impact due to changes in the water balance...

New lucerne cultivar extends rotation options.. "Plant breeding and evaluation trials leading to the development of SARDI-Grazer occurred mainly in low to medium-rainfall areas such as SA's Murray Mallee, as well as the cereal belt in WA, so we have been pleasantly surprised to see it performing so well in high-rainfall areas such as Timboon in south-west Victoria," Mr Humphries says... Mr Humphries says that once established, SARDI-Grazer could be grazed in a two-paddock rotation with six to eight weeks of grazing followed by six to eight weeks of recovery: "The recovery period is critical for recharging the energy reserves of the plant so it maintains excellent levels of production and persistence," he says...

Project falls short, but a step forward.. Jointly managed by the WA Department of Agriculture (DAWA) and Rural Solutions SA (a group from the South Australian Department of Primary Industries and Resources) the "Million Hectares" project has provided new insights into salinity issues... Mr Lacey and Mr Britton both say that while previous research gave industry valuable insights into the causes and impacts of salinity, this project has provided tools to help farmers identify the risks from salinity and assess practical and economic solutions...

For the reasons above, we need a cropping/pasture rotation..

Where dryland salinity threatens the productivity of agricultural land there is a need for farmers to formulate considered responses... From the areas identified by farmers we noticed that mid and upper slope farmers have just as much area of concern (often brackish hillside seeps) and recent outbreaks on their farms as valley floor farmers... There is a need for farmers and catchment groups to invest greater effort in risk assessment and to link the need to know to the risk at given sites...

Although farmers have planted thousands of hectares of trees to try to stop watertables from rising, a lack of profitable tree planting options has led them to more immediate solutions such as drainage and engineering options and broadscale planting of deep-rooted pastures such as lucerne - and the benefits of these measures are analysed... The report draws on a wide range of statewide case studies to analyse the relative merits of salinity management options, including planting lucerne, saltland pastures, lucerne-based pastures, oil rnallees, river red gums, broombush, maritime pines, ironbark, sugar gums and jojoba, as well as sequential perennial pastures and cell grazing...
