The choice of variety will depend on market requirements, environmental conditions, whether the crop is irrigated and the level of disease resistance required... Growers aiming for maximum yields should consider a mid to full season maturity hybrid... A good husk cover (including tip cover) can be important if insects, disease, and pre-harvest rain are likely to pose threats...

The hybrids produced by this project between L. angustifolius and L. luteus will provide the starting material for new research work to backcross the individuals to parent genotypes and current Australian cultivars... The lupin hormone mix developed during the project produced the greatest crossing success rate, but this was not significantly greater than the water treatment... The project succeeded in producing true hybrids for the key cross combination of narrow-leafed lupin x yellow lupin and this result has opened the opportunity for trait transfer between these important crop lupin species...

CSIRO's Dr Michael Robertson said the results of a consultant survey and comparisons with experimental yields indicate a sizeable production gap between above-average and below-average-yielding growers in the high-rainfall zone... Dr Roper said more research was needed to clarify the long-term use of on-row sowing on soil nutrition, organic matter, soil structure and soil-borne diseases on water-repellent soil... "Dual-purpose crops have the capacity to increase overall profitability and productivity by 25 to 75 per cent compared with grain-only crops," Dr Bell said...

Mallee Sustainable Farming's Michael Moodie says trials at Ouyen and Minnipa found using hybrid canola seed did not boost yields in the low rainfall zone.. Mallee Sustainable Farming agronomist Michael Moodie said while growers in the Mallee have found canola can bring benefits as a break crop, the trial was conducted to investigate risks associated with the crop... Trials were conducted at Ouyen and at Minnipa on the Eyre Peninsula, with treatments including time of sowing, variety and timing of nitrogen application...
