improved wheat yield

Catalogue: GRDC Updates
Millet can have a positive effect on following wheat yields, provided the millet crops are sown early in spring and terminated once 50 % cover is achieved... The results showed that if millet was sown early and removed early (40 days after sowing) there was a neutral or positive impact on wheat yield compared to a traditional fallow... The research shows that it is, differences in wheat yield when comparing the MF millet and CF traditional no-till fallows is significant and could be used to offset the costs of millet establishment...

The favourable root architectural traits were identified in the stay-green genotype SeriM82.Wheat genotypes with narrower lateral root distribution and higher root length density at depth can gain improved access to deep soil moisture late in the season when marginal water use efficiency for grain production is high (Manschadi et al 2006; Kirkegaard et al 2007)... Evaluation of the root traits in a wide range of Australian cropping areas using computer simulation modeling for over 100 years of historical meteorological data indicates that they are widely useful in all Australian cropping regions not only in the northern region and, importantly, they do not limit yield in wetter seasons (UQ00057)... We have identified molecular markers and quantitative trait loci (QTL) indicating genetic regions controlling seedling seminal root angle and number in wheat (Christopher et al 2012)...
