Foliar diseases of barley frequently cause significant losses in both yield and grain quality in the Northern Region (NR) and in other barley growing areas of Australia... The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) will change its focus in barley crop investment, giving the commercial sector access to important genetic material developed by the outgoing southern barley breeding program, to enable the best possible advancements in variety development... Dr Betzner said the key focus for GRDC now was to work with the University of Adelaide to make sure that the right licensing framework is put into place to determine access rights and pave the way for the best possible advancements in variety traits... Barley with genetically unique sources of adaptation to the low rainfall environments has been evaluated using lines from the International Centre for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA)... Barley lines from ICARDA have shown potential for the improvement of adaptation, with adaptive features derived from wild barley and primitive barley landraces, and selection for yield and associated adaptive traits in drought prone environments with soils of low fertility... Barley Breeding Australia (BBA)-West operated collaboratively as a part of a national barley breeding strategy to address industry needs in Western Australian (WA) and south eastern (SE) Australian regions with neutral to acid soils... The resulting malting varieties (Baudin and Hamelin ) represented significant improvements in malting quality and there has been strong demand for these varieties in the international marketplace... The germplasm and knowledge developed in this project has provided, and will continue to provide, strong support to the ongoing development of commercially successful, targeted-to-market, elite malting and feed barley varieties by commercial barley breeding entities...
