Foliar fungicide applications at or prior to first node stage (Z31) can be effective at controlling leaf spot diseases in susceptible wheat varieties under high disease pressure... Necrotic leaf area was determined on top 3 to 4 leaves (on 15 tillers /plot) from all plots at Z15, Z25, Z31, Z39, Z55 (i.e. before each foliar fungicide spray) and Z72, or in the case of opportunistic trials assessed at regular intervals after trial establishment... The in-furrow fungicides tested show promise for leaf spot disease control and in the future they may become an alternative to foliar applications, for the control of early season leaf spot infections...

Grains industry training support for indigenous Australians Indigenous Australians keen to pursue a career in the grains industry are being offered a new form of support to help them realise their aspirations... GRDC Executive Manager Practices, Steve Thomas, said the GRDC had established the awards to foster the development of grains industry skills and opportunities within the indigenous population. ".. It is hoped that by providing these financial support mechanisms we can encourage more people of indigenous background, or of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, to consider and seek a role in the grains sector," Mr Thomas said. Higher travel speeds create the majority of issues associated with poor application.. Advisers need to be able to identify application issues and provide feedback to the operator when application technique is affecting efficacy.. I believe all advisers should provide a short report on spray results to follow-up all recommendations, which indicates if an application or control issue has been identified, and how that may be remedied and prevented in the future...

Growers that have the weed seed bank under control will save herbicide costs; be able to use diverse tactics that would otherwise be cost prohibitive; and, by reducing the frequency of herbicide applications, will delay the onset of herbicide resistance... With any discussion on managing resistance we need to start with the basics and understand why we have the problem in the first place... Registration of high application rates by this technique may allow the control of resistant weeds that have survived a preceding application of a different mode of action...

Delaying top-up nitrogen (N) applications until canola crops are flowering is unlikely to incur big yield or oil production penalties in lower-rainfall parts of the Western Australian grainbelt... Mr Seymour says at the majority of sites across the two years, delaying N application until eight or 12 weeks after sowing (near to flowering) or splitting applications produced similar yield results to earlier times of N application... Mr Seymour says splitting applications to 25kg N/ha at sowing and 25kg N/ha eight or 12 weeks later had a better effect on oil and yield than applying a single dose of 50kg N/ha near flowering...

Herbicide and pesticide applications to grain and other crops in Australia are likely to be the subject of increasing restrictions from mid 2010 onwards as the Australian Pesticide and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) imposes no spray buffer zones and other spray drift mitigation measures to prevent off-target pesticide movements onto sensitive areas... For ground-based applications, these models offer few choices of application..... Data to support appropriate spray regulations..

"Results from the project suggest that trying to increase wheat protein with late foliar N application is unlikely to be a very effective management tool in areas where spring rainfall is highly erratic," he said... Although the late foliar application of N can deliver significant increases in protein, it is unlikely to deliver an economic benefit unless grain N recovery rates are high, untreated protein levels are close to a receival grade threshold and the premium between receival grades is at least $20/t," he said... "In terms of application, multiple low rate application in the 2014 trials did not appear to improve the response compared to the same rate applied in one application...

Double Knock This involves an initial treatment with Glyphosate + hormone, followed 10 days later by an application of Paraquat (Gramoxone )... 14 day interval is preferable to 7, if 10 days can't be achieved, as this allows adequate time for the hormone to work within the plant, as well as providing an opportunity to pick up subsequent germinations of weeds 2... Initial chemical treatments were applied and sheep were allowed to graze on the site (around 15 DSE/ha), further treatments were applied post-grazing, including a follow up application of Gramoxone on part of the initial chemical treatments...
