Uncertainty about the effects of rising atmospheric CO 2 levels on crop growth, water use, grain yield and quality led to field experiments being conducted in the Australian grain belt to obtain data on the response of wheat crops to elevated carbon dioxide levels... The collaborative project between the Victorian Department of Primary Industries (Vic DPI) and the University of Melbourne (UM) delivered a national Free Air Carbon Dioxide Enrichment (FACE) facility consisting of a core of 8 x 12 m rings at Horsham, supplemented by a smaller system at Walpeup (Mallee), within a region of strategic importance to the grains industry... The results from this type of research can inform crop breeders about traits responsive to eCO 2 and provide them with information to improve future lines of wheat...

Four Year 11 and 12 agricultural science students from Downlands College, Toowoomba, Queensland, left the classroom behind for a day to attend the Dalby Research Update in March this year... "We selected a group of students from Year 11 and 12 who are interested in agriculture, and thought the Research Update would be a great way to expose them to the opportunities available in the grains area," says science teacher Julie Brophy... The students, all from grain-growing properties around Toowoomba, said they welcomed the opportunity to find out new information to take home to their families...

The contributing factors to soil acidification under the current farming systems are well understood, as are the best practice management systems... For such change in practice to be achieved a whole of industry approach is required and this project will combine a reference committee, on-going education, extension and training of key private and government advisors/consultants who will then support growers into the future... The group will be asked to revisit the major barriers to adoption of liming by growers and propose solutions to overcome them while at the same time consider additional challenges posed by the desired doubling of lime use...

A proposed new Cooperative Research Centre - the Future Farm Industries CRC (FFI CRC) - is being considered to direct research into a new farming system that will better fit livestock and cropping industries into the Australian landscape... The proposed new research enterprise will seek to integrate perennial crops, including natives, into broadacre farming systems to improve profitability, tackle issues such as salinity and generate new regional industries... Its planned outcomes include: "In answer to those who may be wondering if we can do it, the foundation for these new farming systems has already been laid by the CRC for Plant-based Management of Dryland Salinity," Mr Inglis says...
