Growers in high rainfall zones should be proactive and develop a Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV) management plan which includes crop monitoring, green bridge management, foliar pesticide sprays and pre-sowing seed treatment... Trial results have found that the oat and rose grain aphid are found on wheat and barley and the corn aphid favours barley and is rarely found on wheat... Even where there have been large yield losses due to BYDV, trial results have not shown any difference in protein content between sprayed and untreated plots...

The yellow dwarf diseases of cereals have now been divided into two groups, barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) and cereal yellow dwarf virus (CYDV)... Where resistant varieties are not an option the management of aphid activity in crops especially early in the season to prevent its spread and or delayed sowing to avoid the main aphid flights in the autumn can reduce YDV infection... Later sowing to avoid the main aphid flights will reduce the incidence of YDV but this needs to be weighed up against possible yield reduction from delayed sowing...

While the recent cold weather has impacted aphid numbers and activity, the pressure earlier in the season means that there is a level of primary infection in some crops which could escalate rapidly if aphid numbers build significantly in spring... According to NSW Department of Primary Industries plant pathologist Joop van Leur, testing to identify the virus species present in faba bean is still in progress early indications are that the main virus present is Bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV) with smaller incidences of Bean leafroll virus (BLRV) and other luteoviruses... Consultants and growers are being urged to monitor aphid populations closely in the lead up to spring and implement control strategies early to avoid severe virus infection later in the season...

We currently do not have a good understanding of the impact of aphids on winter cereal yield and quality in Australia... There have been relatively few trials that have demonstrated the relationship between aphid infestation and impacts on yield... The location of aphid infestations on the plant, and the timing of these infestations relative to crop maturity have a big impact on how yield and quality will be affected...

Three varieties were evaluated at each site (Fitzroy , Grout and Gairdner ) with four replicates of all treatments... The pattern was common in all trials assessed to the end of September... Gilgandra Pirimor (300 g/ha) and dimethoate were applied to a population of ~36 aphids/tiller in early October, ~3-4 weeks after all other sites, when all varieties had completed head emergence...

Time to tame the green bridge and keep insect pests at bay.. "If aphids are found in very low numbers on only a few plants in the crop, we advise treatment should not be immediately undertaken, but instead further regular monitoring conducted to assess whether the aphid numbers increase to a level that warrants spraying... Mr Kimber said a range of beneficials including ladybird beetles, hoverflies and Braconid wasps that parasitise aphids have been observed during March in close proximity to volunteer canola heavily infested with cabbage aphids...

In high-pressure seasons, cereal aphids can cause yield loss in winter cereals in northern NSW and Queensland... Recent research indicates oat aphids affect yield by reducing the number of viable tillers... Both aphids and predator numbers should be assessed before in-crop insecticides are applied...
