NVT adopts grower approach to disease management.. Mr Bedggood says if the NVT are not treated for disease it misrepresents the potential of some varieties, especially if a commercial variety has become susceptible since its release and is currently widely grown... "To ensure uniformity of treatments, the NVT program likes to sow all seed bare [untreated], as supplied by the plant breeder, so we use a fertiliser at sowing which has been amended with fungicide," Mr Bedggood says...

Genetics continuum keeps the profit margin open.. Mike O'Hare has set aside a portion of his farm for the new wheat variety Beckom after it performed well in GRDC-supported National Variety Trials on his property in southern NSW... Although narrow row spacings allow crops to compete well with weeds, he is aware of the need to preserve the efficacy of glyphosate and likes to use wider points and several other tactics to slow the development of herbicide resistance...

NVT committees break new ground.. "NVT Advisory Committees have been established across the agro-ecological zones of Australia to ensure rigour and relevance to the GRDC-funded NVT program," Mr Giles said... They will determine distribution of site locations, development and confirmation of local sowing windows, confirmation of canola maturity groups for locations, commercial relevance of varieties in the trials and the identification of local benchmark varieties on which to base management decisions, Mr Giles said...

Residual herbicides have become an important tool in the war against weeds for many northern region growers in recent years... Growers are urged to carefully consider their plant-back options for the 2014 winter season in country previously treated with in-crop or fallow residual herbicides as label recommendations for replant intervals usually require a minimum amount of rainfall to kick-start breakdown of the residual herbicide... To determine what crop can be safely sown following a residual herbicide application growers need to calculate the herbicide rate, quantify the amount of rainfall from the date of application up until sowing the plant back crop (excluding isolated storm events during summer) and carefully consult product label recommendations...

The longer season cultivar Westminster topped the NVT trial in the region with a yield exceeding 6t/ha shorter season barley cultivars Skipper and Compass (under malting evaluation), Commander (malt) and the feed cultivar Fathom have also performed well... Early sown (May 10) wheat trials at the Southern Farming Systems (SFS) site in Inverleigh, southern Victoria have shown a yield advantage to feed wheat over the highest yielding milling wheat of 0.8-1.3 t/ha (10-17%), with yields between 7-9 t/ha... Looking at the data from Table 4, the yield gap between feed ( Beaufort and Revenue ) and highest yielding milling wheat ( Bolac ) cultivars is high in absolute yields (0.8-1.3 t/ha) compared to previous data taken from NVT and SFS cultivar trials in the region...

Variety choice influences profitability.. Tom Giles, trial operations manager, GRDC, says the study also shows that in some regions selecting a wheat variety classified as Australian Hard (AH) instead of Australian Premium White (APW) could reduce growers' profitability...
