Six years ago, the GRDC put out a challenge to growers and researchers to work together to tackle one of the fundamental constraints on grain production in this country - better use of plant-available water... Past studies have shown that our industry has only been achieving half of the yield potential from any given season's rainfall - in other words, it generally has not been lack of rainfall that has been holding us back, but the efficiency with which rainfall is captured, stored and used by crops... The concerted effort has delivered new, and more clearly defined, management approaches - to making better use of summer rain via stubble and tillage management and weed control, to crop rotations, in-crop spatial variability and other in-crop decisions, such as nitrogen inputs and foliar spray options...
