Catalogue: Ground Cover
The stripe rust that infects barley grass is either the wheat-attacking form or a second form that is specialised to barley grass... A form of stripe rust that is specialised to barley grass, known as barley grass stripe rust, can infect some barley cultivars, but the threat it poses is minor... Recent GRDC-funded tests in Mexico have shown that Australian barley cultivars are generally susceptible to the barley form of stripe rust, which means this exotic disease poses a significant threat to the Australian barley industry...

Barley grain defects (kernel staining, pre-harvest sprouting and black point) have resulted in tens of million dollars economic loss to the barley industry due to malting barley being discounted or down graded to feed... Development of phenotypic analysis tools for 3 A recently updated "Seedcount" image analysis system was evaluated for barley black point analysis as a replacement for the current visual measurement... Results from the project demonstrate that the Canadian "quality" gene has also resulted in sensitivity to pre-harvest sprouting...

By screening and field testing the resistance and tolerance of wheat and barley cultivars, relevant information can be supplied to allow growers to incorporate cultivars into rotations that limit the populations of and damage caused by nematodes... Significant yield impacts occurred for wheat varieties assessed in Toodyay 2012 when comparing yield to nematode numbers at anthesis (Table 2)... Coupled with resistance data, these results indicate Emu Rock may be only moderately susceptible but very intolerant to P. teres while the other varieties are intolerant but range in levels of susceptibility to the pest...

The research highlighted that Northern Region (NR) wheat and barley varieties differed considerably in their sensitivity to these herbicides... The information generated from this project has the potential to save approximately 20 per cent crop income, as indicated by the 3 to 38 per cent significant yield losses measured for certain cultivars from registered herbicides at the recommended rates... The results from this and the previous projects have identified those cultivar x herbicide combinations that may cause significant yield losses at the herbicide recommended rate and timing...
