Ros Reen and Professor John Thompson from USQ's Centre for Crop Health are working on an international project to extract genes from wild relatives of chickpeas which have been collected in Turkey... The University of Southern Queensland (USQ) has taken delivery of two 'wild relatives' of chickpea from Turkey for its Centre for Crop Health (CCH) to search for ancient genes with resistance to root lesion nematodes ( Pratylenchus thornei and P. neglectus )... The wild relatives being investigated at USQ are ancestors of the chickpea ( Cicer arietinum ), which has been cultivated for more than 7000 years...
