Queensland University of Technology's Professor Peter Grace discusses strategies to help avoid nitrogen losses at a recent GRDC Grains Research Update... The loss is caused by chemical reactions on the surface of the soil, and only occurs in alkaline soils when ammonium-based fertiliser is broadcast and there is no rain to wash it into the soil... Rain is required to wash the fertiliser deeper into the soil profile, but not too much that it could cause denitrification or leaching...

In the central to west Midlands region where I work as an agricultural consultant, I didn't see much evidence of disease until about mid-June... But as temperatures have dropped, crops have slowed in growth and many have turned a bit yellow... Growers are encouraged to take part in the campaign and submit samples so researchers can recover current strains of the fungus, monitor the pathogen and stay on top of any changes, so they are best placed to combat it...

The Better Fertiliser Decisions for Crop Nutrition Fact Sheet states that inefficient or incorrect use of fertiliser can be a substantial, but somewhat hidden cost, in the cropping operation... The new fact sheets have been distributed to growers with the November-December issue of GRDC's Ground Cover magazine and can also be viewed and downloaded via www.grdc.com.au/GRDC-FS-BFDCN and www.grdc.com.au/GRDC-FS-CropNutrition-Micronutrients ... Caption: The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) has released two new fact sheets to enhance grain growers' understanding of crop nutrition...

Mallee grower Dean Wormald shows just how much cropping in this region has changed over the past decade as growers have learned to "farm the rain"... Ten years ago, Dean started pulling down fencelines and now crops paddocks of about 400ha, some with 4km runs for the cropping machinery, lifting efficiency considerably... This year, Dean had already received 256mm by June, raising hopes that the averages - 1.2t/ha for wheat, 1.4t/ha for barley and 0.4t/ha for canola - could easily be doubled in 2014...

Growers thinking of using late-season nitrogen loading to bolster crop protein should think again, following a detailed crop and economic analysis led by the Northern Grower Alliance (NGA)... A research project led by the NGA, a grower solutions group funded by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), conducted trials in 2012 and 2013 to evaluate the impact of late nitrogen strategies on protein accumulation and the likelihood of economic benefit... "The series of 11 trials showed that significant increases in protein can be gained by late nitrogen application, but the level of increase was not sufficient to deliver economic benefits in any trial," NGA chief executive Richard Daniel said...

Prices dictate profitable nutrition.. A simple framework has been developed to help growers and advisers make better fertiliser decisions based on maximising profits, rather than crop yields... Her analyses of N and wheat prices during the past decade indicate gross margins are optimised when growers and advisers can predict the yield response to a wide range of nutrient rates, rather than those typically used for the expected yield...

The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) will this month host a grains research Update at Grenfell where growers will gather to learn about developments in research and practices that can have a positive impact on-farm... The Update will be on Tuesday, July 31, at the Grenfell Bowling Club, where a line-up of expert speakers from throughout Australia will address growers on subjects and issues of most relevance and importance to them... Herbicide resistance expert Dr Chris Preston, from the University of Adelaide, will provide growers with the latest data on herbicide resistance in weeds and an update on developments in pre-emergent options...
