The time factor was changed by growing more generations per year and reducing the degree of homozygosity required before lines are evaluated in yield trials or used as parents... j) Co-operative research DAQ00110 involved cooperation activities for several related projects including the Australian Wheat and Barley Molecular Marker Program (AWBMMP) designed to study attributes needed for the future improvement of barley... QTL associated with barley ( Hordeum vulgare ) feed quality traits measured through in situ digestion...

To reduce the cost of combining traits, molecular markers associated with the genes controlling trait expression have been identified... Breeding lines evaluated under DAQ00175 demonstrated that the new germplasm can alleviate more barley production issues than the previous germplasm or introductions from other parts of Australia... Rather than repeat the outline of breeding activities applied under DAQ00110, information about genes and traits in the new germplasm resource is presented...

The conference will bring together Australian and international delegates with an interest in biological nitrogen (N) fixation... Co-hosted by the Australian Society for Nitrogen Fixation, the University of Adelaide and the SA Research and Development Institute and sponsored by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), the AW Howard Memorial Trust, the SA Grain Industry Trust, BASF Agricultural Specialties and Novozymes Biologicals Australia, the conference will be based at the Plant Research Centre at the Waite Precinct, Urrbrae, and will include a field tour to the Mid North of SA... The theme of the event is "N 2 fixation: reaping the benefits of basic and applied research", and the topics of targeted sessions will include the diversity and ecology of N-fixing organisms; molecular genetics and mechanisms of N fixation; N-fixing symbioses; N fixation in terrestrial systems; and increasing fixed N in farming systems...

Ten recipients of the horizon scholarship announced.. Developed to help address the shortage of trained professionals entering primary industries and designed to promote the diverse career pathways that agriculture offers, the Horizon Scholarship attracts Australia's best and brightest young tertiary students... The students are studying for degrees such as agricultural science and animal and rural sciences at universities across the country, and all are committed to a career in primary industries after their studies...

ecogeographical data and developing a subset of a maximum of 30% of the original size through the proportional selection technique followed by using combined agro-morphological and ecogeographical data and maximising strategy... The overall objective of this project was to develop a method for identifying core collections of pasture (and ultimately grain) legume species using ecogeographical and molecular analyses... In 2006, following the outputs of the bladder clover core collection project, a research project proposal for developing a core collection in subterranean clover and QTL mapping of its genome for flowering time, disease resistance, leaf marks, isoflavones, and hard seededness was submitted to the Australian Research Council...

In summary, it could be argued that none of the currently available preemergence herbicides have the required stability in efficacy to become viable alternatives to postemergence group A or imidazolinone herbicides... Overall, 2012 seasonal conditions tended to favour early and mid flowering and maturing varieties...

Scientists to prioritise herbicide discovery.. As part of the partnership, the GRDC will contribute $45 million over five years, and receive royalties and milestone payments on new herbicide products derived from the joint venture... About to help discover these products are 10 postdoctoral chemists focused on identifying and assessing new chemical molecules with the potential to replace existing herbicides that have succumbed to resistance, Mr MacLeod says...

The upcoming Narrabri and Mullaley grains research updates will give growers and advisors the chance to hear from Professor Michael Walsh as he discusses his extensive research... Dr Walsh has been integral in developing harvest weed seed control processes, and said his research showed that regardless of whether growers were using the Harrington Seed Destructor or a chaff cart behind the header, direct baling harvest residues or narrow windrow burning, the key was to capture and destroy weed seeds... "There is some weed seed shedding at maturity which may make some growers a little skeptical about how much seed is captured at harvest, but research shows a high percentage of total weed seed production is retained on plants at a height that ensures collection during harvesting...

Uncertainty about the effects of rising atmospheric CO 2 levels on crop growth, water use, grain yield and quality led to field experiments being conducted in the Australian grain belt to obtain data on the response of wheat crops to elevated carbon dioxide levels... The collaborative project between the Victorian Department of Primary Industries (Vic DPI) and the University of Melbourne (UM) delivered a national Free Air Carbon Dioxide Enrichment (FACE) facility consisting of a core of 8 x 12 m rings at Horsham, supplemented by a smaller system at Walpeup (Mallee), within a region of strategic importance to the grains industry... The results from this type of research can inform crop breeders about traits responsive to eCO 2 and provide them with information to improve future lines of wheat...
