New report gives insights into grain farm practices.. The report's co-author and GRDC Farm Practices Project Manager, Jan Edwards, says that in comparing the two sets of data, the percentage of farm income flowing from winter cereals has increased in most parts of Australia, (except for central Queensland and parts of Western Australia) and it remains at 66 to 67 per cent of farm income nationally... Ms Edwards said tillage practices had shown some changes since the previous survey, with the percentage of the crop planted using zero or no-tillage remaining high at more than 60 per cent of the hectares nationally, although the percentage has fallen in parts of SA, Victoria and NSW...

An increased use of biofuels and biogas on-farm, along with more efficient fertiliser use, have been cited as the most likely ways for Australia's grains sector to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions... Options presented in the ABARES report include reduced tillage (already a well-advanced practice), optimising fertiliser use, and the production and use of biofuels and biogas as alternatives to fossil fuels... The biggest source of GHGs from cropping, according to the ABARES report, is nitrous oxide, produced by microbial activity in the soil breaking down nitrogen fertilisers (and nitrogen fixed by legumes) that have not been utilised for crop growth...

While the focus was on developing generic models to address questions related to when to attempt eradication and when to contain and mitigate, the focus was on developing decision support tools to achieve optimal management strategies for controlling the parasitic weed branched broomrape ( Orobanche ramosa )... We applied the decision tool to branched broomrape to choose between alternative management strategies and it was parameterised by collaborating with the branched broomrape eradication team... The research provides a move forward in decision theory techniques for ecological systems as previous methods have not dealt with the issue of partially observable states adequately...
