THE VALUE OF FEED GRAIN FOR LIVESTOCK - IT PAYS TO KNOW GRAIN QUALITY.. Both available energy content (MJ/kg) and available energy intake (MJ/day) must be described to fully characterise the energy value of any batch of cereal grain for livestock... A large research effort, the Premium Grains for Livestock Program, funded jointly by the grains and animal research and development organisations and Ridley Agriproducts was established in 1996 to define the range and causes for variation in the quality of cereal grains for different livestock types...

The paddock is finished with a conventional method of ploughing before a crop is planted... Richard Wright (2012), principal of Wright Produce Ltd, U.K, stated "we started in pigs in the 1960's and now run 3,600 sows; the pigs make us money but it's the value of the manure that keeps us in pigs... Given that there is a good chance of extensive soil disturbance by the pigs at the same time, nutrient runoff could happen in heavy rain, polluting water ways and causing water quality problems...

A new test is helping pig producers to use feed more efficiently by revealing the amount of digestible energy in cereal grains... The test, which took seven years to develop, is already generating significant commercial interest, says Dr Ian Johnsson, APL's general manager for research and innovation... The new NIRS calibration will allow pig producers to rapidly and accurately measure digestible energy in cereal grains, such as wheat, barley, triticale and maize, from an imminent harvest, Dr Johnsson says...
