Cycle 2 F2 progeny were assessed for black spot resistance and stem strength in the winter of 2004, together with Cycle 2 parents and the original parents in a black spot nursery to measure the effectiveness of recurrent selection over two cycles... Heritability for both traits was moderate, with broadsense heritability measured at 43% for leaf disease and 39% for stem strength... Of six varieties evaluated in this study, there was significant variation among varieties in stem strength - as measured by force and flexion - and significant variation among varieties in diameter and compressed stem thickness...
