" Increasing the value and marketability of feed grains for the grains industry.. This project aims to gather evidence that grains can vary in nutritve value and that value can often be higher than "standard" or "average" industry quoted values used by stockfeed manufacturers... The aim is to capture trends in feed grain quality across seasons and varieties grown in different regions and to identify the comparitive value of feeds to livestock based on nutritive value...

The longer season cultivar Westminster topped the NVT trial in the region with a yield exceeding 6t/ha shorter season barley cultivars Skipper and Compass (under malting evaluation), Commander (malt) and the feed cultivar Fathom have also performed well... Early sown (May 10) wheat trials at the Southern Farming Systems (SFS) site in Inverleigh, southern Victoria have shown a yield advantage to feed wheat over the highest yielding milling wheat of 0.8-1.3 t/ha (10-17%), with yields between 7-9 t/ha... Looking at the data from Table 4, the yield gap between feed ( Beaufort and Revenue ) and highest yielding milling wheat ( Bolac ) cultivars is high in absolute yields (0.8-1.3 t/ha) compared to previous data taken from NVT and SFS cultivar trials in the region...

Japan has moved a step closer to a more open grain-trading system as part of a new Economic Trade Agreement (ETA) with Australia that is expected to come into force in 2015... The trade agreement removes tariffs for these food-grade wheats... Mr Johnson says the new trade agreement creates the potential to increase AH and APW exports, in joint shipments with noodle blends from Western Australia or APH shipped from Brisbane, Queensland, or Newcastle, New South Wales...

The new technology offers farmers a massive opportunity for accessing information in their own time and in their own way and for minimising time duplication jobs such as data entry... There is a vast amount of applications (apps) and information out there so generally only the highest rated and low cost (or in some cases the only) sites are included in this paper... Twitter is also now commonly used by emergency management organisations to quickly spread messages about emergency events...

The aim of the study was to determine whether the introduction of starch into the diet of lambs as an integral part of the weaning process would provide benefits to the rumen function of the lamb in order to improve feed conversion efficiency... Phone: Fax: Email: Objectives +61 8 85958048 N/A james@chowilla.com.au The focus of this report is to identify opportunities to introduce starch into the diet of lambs at weaning to improve the feed conversion efficiency and improve the lifetime production of the subject animals... The study showed that starch can improve the rumen function of lambs allowing for better feed conversion efficiency and resulting in better performance of the lambs...

High rainfall zone growers should consider growing a malting or feed barley over wheat as the first cereal after the break crop, based on data from National Variety Trials (NVT) in the region and Southern Farming Systems (SFS)... Assuming malt quality is always achieved (which would not be farm experience) and not taking into account possible differences in nitrogen applied, Mr Poole says yields of 5.31t/ha for feed barley at a price of $200/t would require a premium of $11/t to break even, taking account of the reduced yield that goes with growing malting barley based on NVT results... Based on the figures, Mr Poole says there is a "huge" case to be made as to whether or not growers in the HRZ should be planting barley as the first cereal after canola and push it harder with more nitrogen like they would with a wheat crop...
