crop stubble

Catalogue: GRDC Media
Studies funded by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) are investigating whether crop stubbles offer useful amounts of phosphorus (P) to plants during the growing season... The research is being conducted by the University of Adelaide which plans to develop a better understanding of how P is released from stubble and then taken up by subsequent crops... ENDS Caption: University of Adelaide research student Sarah Noack is involved in a study which plans to develop a better understanding of how P is released from stubble and then taken up by subsequent crops...

Research shows that nutrients released from stubble, including phosphorus, need to be factored in when planning fertiliser requirements.. The type, size, placement and overall stubble load, as well as rainfall and soil moisture, can all influence the timing and amount of phosphorus released from stubbles to soil... A recent glasshouse experiment conducted by Sarah examined how the size and placement of stubble affected the amount of stubble phosphorus returned to the soil, and how much of this phosphorus was subsequently used by wheat plants...

Control snails this autumn to prevent crop damage.. Western Australian growers who had snails present in 2012 harvest samples or who have found the pests on soil beneath stubbles are urged to implement management practices including baiting this autumn... "Snails causing damage to WA crops are predominantly small conical snails which are suited to all soil types, and cropping areas where snails are most problematic include south coastal districts and some areas near Geraldton," she said...

Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fertilisers together constitute one of the largest variable input costs for grain production... Excessive amounts of fertiliser application will not only directly increase input costs but can also lead to yield penalties as well as negative environmental impacts such as greenhouse gas emissions... Current decision support systems, especially those based on soil testing, often underestimate the contribution of all potential soil nutrient pools...

Many previous studies suggest that the timing and quantities of P release vary and are not well explained by the total amount of P or the ratio of carbon (C):P in the residues... Previous work indicates that as plants take up 'luxury' P they store this as orthophosphate... At first glance, these results suggest that following the first significant summer rainfall event, the majority of stubble P would be released from the stubble...

New research has confirmed that heavy rain results in better moisture penetration into the soil and reduced evaporation when crop stubble is cut relatively high and paddocks are covered by thick mulch... The findings have been achieved by PhD student George Swella, from Tanzania, whose research is being funded by The University of Western Australia (UWA) and the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC)... "During very light rainfall, more water will penetrate the soil in systems where there is stubble cut low to about 10cm, combined with bare ground between the rows," Mr Swella said...
