Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus can be a threat in all environments, and it is recommended that seed be treated with imidicloprid, or crops closely monitored for aphid infestation and sprayed ... In the circumstances using fertilisers that have a higher sulphur content, like MES 10 or Airseeder Superfect, can be beneficial... A fast track project was initiated to demonstrate and evaluate a range of management strategies that Twelve farms were surveyed across the western districts of southern Victoria that were considered suitable as potential trial sites based on grower and adviser recommendations...

Mallee grower Dean Wormald shows just how much cropping in this region has changed over the past decade as growers have learned to "farm the rain"... Ten years ago, Dean started pulling down fencelines and now crops paddocks of about 400ha, some with 4km runs for the cropping machinery, lifting efficiency considerably... This year, Dean had already received 256mm by June, raising hopes that the averages - 1.2t/ha for wheat, 1.4t/ha for barley and 0.4t/ha for canola - could easily be doubled in 2014...

After early work showed success on soil types suitable for pulses, the project is exploring pulse production and profit on a wider range of soils... Mr Moodie says pulses were being put to the test in northern Victoria and the SA Mallee, which have similar average annual rainfalls (about 260 millimetres) and average growing-season rainfall (GSR) of about 170mm... Even if we use the five-year average price - which is far less than the actual 2015 price - lentils came through profitably," he says...

Fourth-generation South Australian grower Dean Wormald has seen the farming landscape change dramatically since he returned home from school to farm at Caliph, in the Mallee, 30 years ago... The Caliph district's annual rainfall average is 270 millimetres, but Dean can tell you about years such as 1982, when just 75mm had fallen to the end of June and only 12mm fell during the rest of the year... This year, when Ground Cover caught up with Dean, mild weather for seeding and 256mm of rain by June represented a bumper start...

Vary your nitrogen for best results in the Mallee.. Using a combination of field trials and simulation modelling, we tested the theory that it would be profitable and better for risk management to zone according to responsiveness to nitrogen," Dr Llewellyn says... Cover of Nitrogen Management in stubble retained systems booklet "We did note that while the yields were good on the swales, the protein levels in the 'nil fertiliser' treatment were starting to drop, which indicates persistent lack of nitrogen fertiliser would not be sustainable, even on the heaviest swales and regular monitoring of starting nitrogen levels is needed."..

And the start to 2016 still had everyone guessing: "Some people got up to 80 millimetres early in the year, and others 15 to 20mm; it's been all over the shop," says Kate, as seeding programs got off to a tentative start in mid to late April... "We're all approaching it like any other year, but keeping inputs down and increasing our lentil acreage - a pretty common trend across the region," she says... Kate says that given circumstances in the Mallee, keeping input costs down, particularly fertilisers, is the main tactic people will be using through the season...
