Grain and Graze 3 is the third phase of a mixed farming investment by the GRDC... Theme 1 - Enhanced grazing of cropped land Spring varieties of cereal and brassica crops offer a significant potential feed source for Western Australian mixed-farming businesses and can provide improved returns for mixed farmers when implemented across the whole farming system... Most farmers and advisors know that integrated complex mixed farming systems provide better returns than cropping and livestock enterprises individually, because together they help a farmer to better manage business and seasonal risk...

The research has been conducted in WA wheatbelt to determine if new and existing varieties of barley vary in tolerance to commonly used herbicides... The sensitivity of the variety is summarised, using the following symbols based on the yield responses across all trials: not tested or insufficient data.. (z) no significant yield reductions at recommended rates or higher than recommended rates in (z) trials x% (w/z) narrow margin, % yield reductions at higher than recommended rate, but not tested at recommended rate significant event occurring w years out of z years tested...

Enhanced efficiency fertilisers (EEFs), including slow release compounds and urease and nitrification inhibitors, show promise for improving efficiency, increasing management flexibility, and reducing N2O emissions... Enhanced efficiency fertilisers, including controlled release fertilisers and fertilisers amended with urease or nitrification inhibitors, show promise for improving nitrogen use efficiency... The main objective of the project is to assess the benefits of enhanced efficiency fertilisers, particularly nitrification inhibitors, in mitigating nitrous oxide emissions and increasing the efficiency of nitrogen fertilisers for a range of agricultural industries, including cropping (Victoria and NSW), sugarcane (Queensland) and dairy (Victoria), under different climatic conditions that are found across Australia...

Making the Most of a Wet Summer in the Southern Region - a publication initiated by the GRDC Southern Regional Panel - has been designed to assist growers in capitalising on the rare seasonal circumstances... The biggest management challenges facing growers include stubble management, weed management, nutritional issues and pest and disease management," Mr Shannon said. ".. Mr Shannon said the publication brought together available knowledge on key issues facing growers over the coming season and provided a reference framework for decision-making in the current production environment. In one project partnered by BCG (formerly the Birchip Cropping Group), 10 farming systems groups across Victoria, NSW, South Australia, Tasmania, Western Australia and Queensland are trialling practical measures aimed at minimising the impact of climate change on farm viability... The specific objectives of the NAMI initiative are to: directly involve farmers and advisers in designing on-ground demonstrations of locally relevant adaptations to climate change to maintain or improve farm viability; assist rapid dissemination of information about adapting to and mitigating climate change; assess the greenhouse gas emission implications of different farming practices; demonstrate practices that could reduce net greenhouse gas emissions from nitrous oxide and methane as well as increase soil carbon sequestration; and increase awareness and knowledge in the grains industry of the viability of greenhouse gas mitigation strategies and demonstrate how to put them into practice... GRDC managing director Peter Reading says the initiative will help equip primary producers with the tools to adapt and adjust to the impact of climate change and manage greenhouse gas emissions - two issues that have been identified as key 'drivers for change' in the industry to 2012 and beyond...
