Supplementing cattle or sheep grazing wheat or triticale with an Na or Mg supplement can increase animal liveweight gains by 20 to 60 per cent.. Provide mixture of 1:1 Causmag (MgO):salt (NaCl) at an allowance of 20 grams per head per day for sheep and 140g/head/day for cattle... Overall, supplementation increased the beef production per hectare by 92kg and increased returns by $246 at a cost of $22/ha (6 cents/hd/day)...

Crop nutrient budgets for grain and cotton crops in the northern region are consistently negative for most, if not all, nutrients... The balance of nutrients removed in harvested product is coming from the background soil fertility in both organic (primarily N and S) and inorganic (P, K and other cations) forms... Current commercially available soil tests for both P and K are correlated with the immediately plant-available nutrient pools, so the background soil nutrient reserves are undetected and there is.....

In a survey of 134 paddocks across the northern grains region during 2003-06, we found that 41% of sunflower crops were sown into a long fallow following a winter cereal (wheat or barley), 25% of crops were sown into a short fallow following sorghum, and just 13% were double cropped into wheat or barley stubble (L Serafin and S Belfield, unpublished)... Further trial work is needed to provide additional data to develop our understanding of the full impacts of sulfur nutrition... The results suggest that sunflower oil contents may be more specifically targeted and fertiliser N inputs more accurately determined for optimum profitability...

A Western Australian study shows that applying biochar made from wheat chaff and eucalyptus wood may have some negative effects on sandy soils.. To assess the impact of biochar on nitrogen leaching in a sandy soil from Meckering, WA, Mr Dempster ran another glasshouse trial and compared the results to those achieved by adding clay - another ameliorant being used by some growers to enhance soil fertility... The results showed yield decreased significantly from 2.1t/ha to 1.7t/ha when biochar was banded into the subsoil...

Farm business grows on novel mix of options.. The plan was to cold-press canola to produce oil for use in animal feeds and biodiesel, with canola meal also sold for animal feed... Rob says there is nothing new in the technology to cold-press oilseeds, but it is the only operation of its kind in Tasmania...

Weeds researcher Peter Newman is encouraging growers with autosteer on their headers who burn harvest windrows for weed seed control to move their windrows by one metre each year to minimise the amount of nutrients lost from windrowed stubble... If the header follows a different path each year, the potassium is eventually redistributed across the paddock and only nitrogen is lost, Mr Newman says... With higher fertiliser prices and most headers fitted with autosteer, he says "the game has changed and we need to react "...

Trials show that chickpeas, such as this crop at Emerald, Central Queensland, have the potential to lift yields in subsequent wheat crops... Trials of chickpea/wheat rotations in the Central Queensland grain-growing region show that using chickpeas as a break crop could help growers increase yields, protein levels and profitability in subsequent wheat crops... Results for a trial at 'Wongalee', near Theodore, CQ, showed a huge increase in both the yield and protein content of wheat grown after chickpeas. "..
