The availability of herbicide tolerant lentil varieties (XT) reduces the risks of production in this crop... In some cases pod set of beans was poor early on due to the cooler temperatures and overcast conditions during early flowering, and in some crops of chickpeas a number of empty pods were observed because temperatures failed to reach critical levels for seed set... Similarly in lentils, ascochyta blight was observed in crops relatively early and reduced grain yield and quality in the more susceptible varieties, like PBA Flash , where it was not adequately controlled...

Varieties listed in the paper are covered by PBR... At both 77 and 101 mm, Fleet showed the least reduction in emergence, followed by Buloke, Commander and Schooner... Overall, the results emphasise the need to sow varieties that have short coleoptiles at shallow depths and to take care with seed grading and the use of seed dressings...

The choice of fungicide treatments at seeding is very important for managing diseases on farm as well as across a region... A particular concern with NFNB is the continuing rapid evolution of virulence in this pathogen with Keel, Maritime , Fleet and Oxford showing rapid falls in resistance rating in recent years... Extensive testing of isolates of the fungus taken across SA in recent years has shown that none of the strains tested have combined virulence on Fleet and Maritime so in some areas Maritime may have appeared as quite resistant...

A brief word on choosing varieties.. The CL Plus varieties represent a both a 5 to 10% yield improvement on JNZ and STL and tolerance to the full rate of Intervix from 3 leaf onwards... The aim of the paper is to assist advisors and growers in making appropriate canola variety decisions by providing an appraisal of the varieties most suited to each region...

Overall the results so far are indicating that future models to predict yield loss will need to incorporate seasonal effects which change the rate of yield loss per unit of stripe rust infection... By testing a wide range of varieties that have different levels of resistance to stripe rust we can test our assumption... The first year of results show that the relationship of yield loss we observed in the 2011 trials is consistent with that experienced in other regions of Australia...
