Increased capture and use of deep subsoil water We observed that subsoil manuring enabled the crop roots to extract more deep soil water from the subsoil layers in dry years... We believe that the improved ability of the canola crop on subsoil-manured plots to establish, and then withstand the heavy winter rainfall at the Penshurst site in 2010 (Table 3), compared with the commercial crop, resulted from better aeration in the subsoil... There was no need for the crop to extract water from the subsoil, as there was ample soil water in the topsoil...

A Subsoil Reference Manual produced as part of this project provides important information in a relatively easy to follow format... Possible reasons underlying the lack of response to subsoil amelioration in the current project were assessed in a glasshouse trial using intact cores (which maintained the chemical/physical integrity of the soil profile)... Significant correlations between different subsoil factors were found, supporting observations in a previous study that was limited to a single district (Nuttall et al. 2003)...

"What we end up getting after subsoil manuring is a larger bucket size and soil capable of holding three times its original capacity of plant-available water, which can be stored deep in the profile to be used in the spring grain-fill period achieving much higher water use efficiency.".. While results are still inconclusive as to which manure or organic matter might be best to use, Dr Peries says they do need to find a material that is more abundantly available should the popularity of subsoil manuring increase...

The first objective of this project was to determine whether subsoil manuring would deliver grain yield increases at a range of sites across the Victorian high rainfall zone (HRZ)... The per ha estimated cost associated with the 20 t/ha subsoil manuring intervention in 2009, at the Penshurst and Derrinallum sites, were higher than we had previously estimated (Table 1)... Using the results in Table 4, we estimated that the average annual increase in wealth (the annual annuity) for this lower rate of subsoil manuring at 10 t/ha, was lower than that from the higher rate of litter incorporation, but was still in excess of $300 / ha / year (Table 5)...
