The introduction and maturation of next-generation sequencing technology provides an excellent opportunity to develop genome-wide molecular markers and genomic breeding tools for breeding next generation of barley varieties with improvement of productivity, adaptation and better marketability... The project will decode about 800 million genetic letters of barley chromosome 7H in about 8000 clones using next generation sequencing technology... The success of the project will enable breeders and pre-breeders to access the genomic sequence to dissect the genes on chromosome 7H for yield, adaptation, quality, biotic and abiotic stress tolerance and to develop diagnostic molecular markers and genomic breeding tools...

The aim of the project was to clone the scald resistance gene Rrs1 from barley and identify more resistant barley germplasm that is not used by barley breeders... Results show that Rrs1 resides at a genome region hosting a suite of 10-14 similar genes that are candidates for resistance genes against different scald pathotypes...
