Dr Mehmet Cakir, Senior Research Fellow at Murdoch University, WA, will conduct and co-ordinate research evaluating Russian wheat aphid resistance in wheat and barley, thanks to a five year GRDC grant... Russian wheat aphid can destroy up to 70 per cent of a wheat crop and more than that in barley... The project will evaluate resistance, develop resistant wheat and barley varieties to biotypes of Russian wheat aphid and finally identify molecular markers for resistance so that continuous breeding for Russian wheat aphid is possible in Australia," Dr Cakir said. The project will undertake an ambitious field program across South Australia and Victoria to evaluate the different resistance genes available to wheat breeding programs to determine the level of resistance required to manage CCN, Pratylenchus neglectus and P. thornei populations in current farming systems, and develop recommendations to breeding companies on the need for resistant and tolerant varieties across the southern region... To improve recommendation to growers, the project will also assess tolerance of current wheat and barley varieties to CCN, P. neglectus and P. thornei and update guidelines on use of nematode resistant and tolerant varieties to minimise yield losses, including revising the risk categories based on initial nematode levels... A new research officer Sjaan Davey, has been appointed to this project and in collaboration with Dr Grant Hollaway,DPI Vic (via GRDC project DAV00104), and Bev Gogel and Prof Brian Cullis (GRDC project, Statistics for the Australian Grains Industry), is co-ordinating field trials in SA and Victoria to check the calibration of the pot experiments used to classify the resistance levels to CCN, Pratylenchus neglectus and P. thornei in new varieties, and is developing a field program to assess how well new varieties tolerate the nematodes in the current farming systems...

A near-perfect start with good summer and autumn rain coupled with mild temperatures saw crops jump out of the ground... Insect pests including green peach aphid (GPA) and the resulting beet western yellows virus (BWYV or synonym, turnip yellows virus) and diamondback moth (DBM) both proved headaches for growers at different stages of the growing season... Mr Baker says the colonisation of DBM in canola crops this year looks to be at a lower level for much the same reason as the risk of GPA and BWYV is this year - a much drier summer and early autumn than last year and less of a green bridge on which to survive...
