Early lock-up enables a crop sufficient time to achieve biomass levels at flowering to fully recover grain yield but lower residual biomass at lock-up can reduce crop recovery during a sensitive window around or shortly after GS30 in cereals and bud visible in canola... We believe there is a 'sensitive' window when the crop may still be grazed but sufficient residual biomass is required to allow the crop to reach its critical biomass or leaf area to achieve potential grain yields... We firstly present some results form an experiment conducted at Greenethorpe, NSW in 2013 where a range of mechanical defoliation intensities (hard cut - 5 cm, moderate cut - 8 cm and 'clip' cutting - removing leaves) and lock-up timings were imposed to explore their impact on yield recovery in a winter and spring wheat and canola...

In a further study the correlation between rooting depth yield and uptake of B was measured at a B toxic site for three varieties differing in their level of B tolerance... Rooting depth was measured to a depth of 1m using soil cores taken immediately after harvest with soil cores segmented at 20cm intervals... B may not be the primary factor influencing rooting depth and the work of Nuttall et al. indicates that subsoil salinity and sodicity have a greater influence on water extraction from the subsoil than does B. This does not imply that B tolerance is irrelevant but indicates "transect" studies using a single variety need to be complemented by studies utilising isogenic lines to define the effect on yield of subsoil constraints...

We in the north are still working out where and how best to use P in our fertiliser programs... The representation for different crop species, soil types and seasons is somewhat limited... Closing the exploitable yield gap (80% of Yw - Ya) would increase yields by 1.2 t/ha to raise the regional average to 2.9 t/ha... There is a strong correlation (r 2 = 0.72) between Yw and Yg (Figure 5) indicating that across all locations and seasons, the higher the yield potential the higher the yield gap... Average annual values of Ya, Yw, Yg and Y % (figure 7) per SLA show that some SLAs have larger yield gaps than others...
