No aphids were collected with MACE resistance to carbamate insecticides, including pirimicarb # - the insecticide widely recommended for GPA control in Australia... There was also no evidence of imidacloprid # resistance in Australian GPA. Border treatments were effective in reducing aphid immigration and virus transmission into canola paddocks from nearby sources, but further study is necessary to determine the effects on aphids arriving from longer distances... The results indicate that an 18 m buffer of Gaucho-treated plants has a significant effect on the immigration of aphids and the introduction of virus into canola paddocks when the aphids are arriving from adjacent areas...

In total, detailed dose response experiments were conducted on 25 populations of annual ryegrass that were suspected of being resistant to glyphosate... Dose response experiments examining populations with different resistance mechanisms showed that the target site mutation in SLR 77 resulted in a population that is less resistant to glyphosate compared with populations containing the reduced translocation mechanism, such as NLR 70... Using a knockdown rotation of the double knock in one year and glyphosate alone in the next year is predicted to result in glyphosate resistance occurring after 26 years for the translocation mechanism and more than 40 years for the target site mechanism (Figure 20)..

The important factors in getting pre-emergent herbicide to work effectively while minimising crop damage are: to understand the position of the weed seeds in the soil; the soil type (particularly amount of organic matter and crop residue on the surface); the solubility of the herbicide; and its ability to be bound by the soil... Weed seeds will most likely absorb herbicide if the herbicide is at or below the seed in the soil profile... Only some of the mutations provide resistance to both groups of herbicides...

The trend for increasing herbicide resistance in Australian cropping systems is likely to continue, at least in the near future... The majority of plants in a wild weed population will be susceptible to herbicides effective on that species...
