The keynote speaker at the main Update at Wagga Wagga was Canadian researcher and leading canola expert Malcolm Morrison on the practices behind yield gains in his home country, drawing parallels with common problems faced by farmers growing canola in two very different cropping environments... Also of high interest were presentations on GRDC's National Frost Initiative and related work on minimising and mitigating frost damage, early sowing for wheat and canola, the pros and cons of strategic tillage, managing herbicide resistant weeds and tips for reducing beet western yellows by controlling green peach aphid populations...

New South Wales agronomists, advisers, consultants and growers are invited to a pre-sowing technical workshop to discuss frost management in 2015... The workshop in Wagga Wagga on March 27 will be one of three forums being hosted by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) in the southern cropping region to investigate best practice frost management ahead of this year's cropping season... Topics will include early sowing versus late sowing; frost patterns in the Australian grain belt; assessing synoptic charts and how to use this information; row spacing, stubble and recovery; characterising frost events and their impacts on grain sterility; and variety rankings and how to use this in decision making ...

Seed destructor set for test debut in the south this harvest Grain growers throughout Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales are about get their first glimpse of the Harrington Seed Destructor in action on their own turf... The HSD has been developed by Western Australian grower and inventor Ray Harrington, with assistance from the Australian Herbicide Resistance Initiative (previously the Western Australian Herbicide Resistance Initiative), the University of South Australia and the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC)... The results confirmed the efficacy of the unit in reducing annual ryegrass emergence, paving the way for its introduction into Australian farming systems...

Weed specialists from Western Australia are joining forces with locals to tackle the rapidly growing issue of herbicide resistance during a series of one day weed management workshops for leading growers and advisors in New South Wales...
