Ray Harrington to address NSW IWM workshops.. Western Australian grower and inventor of the renowned Harrington Seed Destructor, Ray Harrington, will be a keynote speaker at a series of one day workshops aimed at addressing management strategies for the region's most problematic weeds through the destruction of weed seedbanks and use of integrated control options to improve cropping options and profitability... The workshops are run by ICAN Rural as part of a new project supported by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) and being held in partnership with WeedSmart, an industry-led initiative managed by AHRI which is aimed at enhancing on-farm practices and promoting the long term sustainability of herbicide use in Australian agriculture...

In the short term, IWM costs more than a herbicide only approach but this should be viewed as an investment in the longer life of our herbicide resource... In the short term (at least the next 8 years), these crops will in essence provide new uses for old herbicides and old herbicide groups... In summary, the research also indicates that the public is least likely to approve of GMOs that: Benefit a company over the public; Involve gene transfer from species that are not closely related; Are not undertaken for a societal benefit; Are perceived as being possibly harmful to people or the environment; or Is a food over a non-food application...
