DAFWA’s Craig Scanlan explains the benefits of lime incorporation with cultivation during 2013 field days.. Craig says it is most likely that incorporating lime with cultivation did not lift yields above those achieved with cultivation alone in this first year of the trial because only a small proportion of soil was ameliorated by the one-way plough... Craig says the cultivation response at the Dalwallinu site was driven by the removal of a soil physical constraint (acidity). He says the economic success of incorporating lime with cultivation depends on the implement being able to mix to the depth where the soil constraint occurred...

Cultivation to incorporate lime can be more economic than topdressing where: Ca in the 0-10cm layer is well below the recommended 5.5 Ca in the 10-20cm layer is well below the recommended 4.8.. Researchers are starting to devise economic and productivity parameters around cultivating to incorporate lime on acidic soils, rather than topdressing lime... Get lime in your firing line this summer.. Higher quantities of agricultural lime are needed to achieve these results and Mr Gazey said the best product was the cheapest per unit of neutralising value delivered and spread on farm... Long term WA trial data shows top-dressed lime can take five or more years to significantly increase subsurface pH below 10cm...

" Agribusiness Trial Extension Network.. Trial results have been mixed and there has been little investigation regarding the most efficient form of liquid P in cropping systems... There has also been little investigation of the influence of the water application volume used to apply P on the efficiency of P use in NSW. Work by Landmarks Product Development Group in South Australia, Victoria and Southern NSW has shown that the use of higher water rates to deliver liquid P results.....

The grower group 'technical audit' of 61 farmers in Western Australia's northern grainbelt was funded by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) and tracks the adoption of practices relating to management of variation in soil types and yield potential, soil health and innovative enterprise... "In the case of auto-steer - used by 92 per cent of growers - this adoption has been rapid; on average the farmers had only just used this technology for the first time in 2006," she said... "Some growers adopted these practices in the past but are now scaling down or no longer using them due to issues such as reduced crop yields and poorer crop establishment in the case of zero-till," Ms Hollamby said...

In mixed farming systems grazing of the pasture phase can be used to minimise weed burdens but for continuous croppers, or within the cropping phase of mixed farming, some tillage might be needed for integrated weed management... From an overall systems perspective, limited and strategically timed tillage could form part of a productive, sustainable system... A central question emerges : How much damage is done to soil by occasional tillage, strategically applied, in an otherwise no-till system We seek to investigate this question based on the hypothesis: That the agronomic and economic benefits of a strategic tillage operation exceed any agronomic costs due to damage to soil structure...

Trials by the Northern Grower Alliance and funded by the Grains Research and Development Corporation found that adding nitrogen to crops did not have any impact on yield, making the additional cost and potential loss in nitrogen (N) fixing ability a double hit... Northern Grower Alliance Research Manager Lawrie Price said the results were fairly conclusive, with none of the research sites showing any significant increase in yield to N application rate... "It is possible that during a wet season it might be of benefit so research would need to be conducted during a wet year to draw any conclusions about those conditions," Mr Price said...

For millenia our farmers have been harnessing the activities of soil organisms to provide society with food and fibre... Microrgansisms cannot be seen but without them our soils would be unable to support plant growth... Through the national program, an innovative website, www.soilquality.org.au, has been launched to enable growers to compare the condition of their soils with that of their regional farming..

Barley is a major winter crop in southern Australia, ranked second behind wheat in area and production... Development of agronomic practices to improve barley production in new farming systems... Key issues will include sowing time, crop establishment, nitrogen response and harvest management of these new varieties, with one aim being to increase the proportion of the crop achieving malt specification...
