The important factors in getting pre-emergent herbicide to work effectively while minimising crop damage are: to understand the position of the weed seeds in the soil; the soil type (particularly amount of organic matter and crop residue on the surface); the solubility of the herbicide; and its ability to be bound by the soil... Weed seeds will most likely absorb herbicide if the herbicide is at or below the seed in the soil profile... Only some of the mutations provide resistance to both groups of herbicides...

Brome grass is becoming an increasing problem... Both species are commonly referred to as ripgut brome often resulting in confusion over correct identification... Recent research has shown that seed collected from field populations of both species are showing longer dormancy which appears to be under hormonal control within the seed embryo...

Overall, both models are acceptable for modelling soil evaporation over a range of soils and seasons provided accurate soil physical properties and starting water states are known... For most herbicide modes of action there is more than one resistance mechanism that can provide resistance and within each target site, there are a number of amino acid modifications that provide resistance... Only some of the mutations provide resistance to both groups of herbicides... Most target site mutations selected by fop herbicides can be controlled by clethodim...

"Due to the dry spring and autumn, herbicide residues were likely to show up in the 2013 growing season, providing us with a great opportunity to investigate the effects of tolerant versus intolerant varieties of wheat, barley, canola and lentils," Mr Wallis said... Mr Wallis says the research was of particular interest as more growers incorporated imi-tolerant varieties into their cropping systems to combat hard to kill weeds... "It is strongly recommended that growers using imidazolinone herbicides go back in with a tolerant variety in the subsequent year, unless rainfall has exceeded the plant-back requirement listed on the herbicide label," he said...

The list of herbicides that achieved very high levels of control (> 95%) from two replicated experiments were; Dual Gold, Flame, Spinnaker and high registered rates of atrazine (Table 1)... The results presented in this paper originated from various projects funded by GRDC and Industry and Investment NSW...

Researchers anticipate an increase in resistanace to Group B 'imi' herbicdies (e.g. Intervix in annual tyegrass and brome grass in cropping areas as the number of different Clearfield (insert registration symbol) or imi tolerant crop options grows... For tillage situations, 1.6L/ha of Avadex Xtra and 1.5L/ha of trifluralin are commonly used in canola, dependent on soil type (note these rates are too high for cereals)... the sole reason i am using the long fallow followed byrr canola is weed control...

" Stubble & soil binding of pre-emergent herbicides for annual ryegrass control in winter crops 20 December 2013 Advances in weed management - Webinar 3 - Stubble & soil binding of pre-emergent herbicides for annual ryegrass control in winter crops Pre-emergent herbicides are one of the key management tactics for managing annual ryegrass in winter crop production systems in Australia... The webinar will investigate the properties of key pre-emergent herbicides pyroxasulfone (Sakura ), prosulfocarb/s-metolachlor (Boxer Gold), dimethenamid-P (Outlook ) and trifluralin (Treflan ) and how the herbicide properties affect stubble binding and soil mobility... Dale brings an international flavour to the webinar series, presenting the webinar from his base in Colorado, USA. Dale retired from the USDA-ARS in early 2103 where he had led the research into residual herbicides and soil interaction for over 12 years...
