Field trials undertaken over the last 4 years have investigated various pre-emergence herbicides for brome grass control in wheat... In a recent survey by Fleet and Gill (2008), farmers in low rainfall districts in South Australia and Victoria reported increasing incidence of barley grass in their crops... In the paper we will report results of studies undertaken to develop management strategies for brome and barley grass...

As a consequence of the project UA00060, vital information has been obtained on the seedbank ecology and population dynamics of brome in response to various management strategies developed through on-farm research... Results from the survey of grower paddocks on Yorke (YP) and Eyre Peninsulas (EP) in South Australia (SA) confirmed the species of brome grass infesting cereal crops of southern Australia as Bromus diandrus and Bromus rigidus ... Several studies were undertaken at Roseworthy to investigate the germination behaviour of different populations of brome grass ( B. diandrus and B. rigidus ) collected from sites on YP and EP. Clear differences were shown between species, with populations of B. diandrus germinating at a much faster rate than its close relative, B. rigidus ...

Preliminary results indicate that strategic crop phases of legumes (lupins or vetch) or pasture with Clearfield wheat can significantly reduce brome seed-banks... Use of Sulfonly Urea herbicide Atlantis or tank mixes of Trifluralin & Logran in wheat resulted in poor control of brome grass and caused the seed-bank to rise substantially (2.35 & 2.99 fold)... Indicative of the poor herbicide options available for the control of brome in wheat, this crop type caused a 2.67 fold increase in the brome grass seed-bank...

Adelaide forum to set the scene for 2013 cropping season.. Farming systems built to withstand the impact of weeds, diseases, pests, seasonal constraints and market vagaries will take centre stage in Adelaide next month... Caption: GRDC Southern Regional Panel chair David Shannon says the annual Adelaide Update plays a critical role in delivering information, knowledge and resources to farm advisers who can in turn inform their farming clients and prepare them for the season ahead...

There was no impact on crop vigour or barley establishment and brome grass numbers were reduced by up to 54% by some pre-emergent chemicals... Burning also reduced numbers considerably by 58%, but its practice goes against a lot of No-Till system aims and the Northern and Yorke Natural Resources Management Board (NYNRM) objectives for ground cover... Local farmer case studies have shown that practices such as burning narrow wind-rows, re-seeding, an autumn tickle, growing competitive crops, spot spraying and chemical fallowing are all successful at reducing brome grass numbers...

Brome grass is becoming an increasing problem... Both species are commonly referred to as ripgut brome often resulting in confusion over correct identification... Recent research has shown that seed collected from field populations of both species are showing longer dormancy which appears to be under hormonal control within the seed embryo...

We have been conducting a series of trials to determine the ability of various pre-emergent herbicides to control brome... Trials have been conducted at various sites in SA and Victoria and on both species of brome... Brome was sprayed at 0 (T-0), 3 (T-3), 5 (T-5), 7 (T-7), 10 (T-10), 12 (T12) and 14 (T-14) days after sowing...

Break crops aid brome grass control.. Waikerie grower Tim Paschke has successfully reduced brome populations by incorporating breaks into his cropping sequence... "We used to run a wheat/wheat/barley/barley rotation, with direct drilling into stubble, and would work up the soil after the four years," Tim says...
