In commercial practice in Australia the implementation of precision agriculture (PA) has in common the use of spatially-aware technologies made possible through the use of global positioning systems (GPS)... Although PA technology has been available in Australia for more than a decade, it has been estimated that only around 3% of Australian grain growers are using some form of the technology (Price, 2004)... The work has been carried out with funding from the Grains Research and Development Corporation and CSIRO Sustainable Ecosystems...

It is important to remember that there are many ways in which PA can be adopted and used to make or save money, improve timeliness or environmental management and to carry out onfarm trials... If a grower purchases a GPS unit using one system and then changes to one using the other system, locations will not be translate accurately... Growers are not confident in using the currently available indices in making cropping decisions...

The maps can be used to assess how much variation is needed for PA to be profitable and identify areas of paddocks responsive to inputs... While the results will go some way towards informing the debate about the profitability of PA, it illustrates that the use of, and benefits from, PA technology vary from farm to farm - in line with farmer preferences and circumstances... A new approach to thinking about management zones as responsive/unresponsive to inputs, rather than the traditional approach of static zones based on average yield performance...
