"We have developed an economic calculator to calculate the profit from using a zone-management system for fertiliser application within a paddock, compared with using a uniform rate over the whole paddock," he says... The calculator takes into account relative areas of zones within a paddock, yield differences between zones, soil nutrient levels between zones and the prices of grain and fertiliser... "Based on the potential yields of different zones in a paddock, it will generate an optimal fertiliser recommendation for each of those zones," Dr Lawes says...

" Agribusiness Crop Updates 2006 Analysis of a wheat-pasture rotation in the 330 annual rainfall zone using the STEP model Andrew Blake and Caroline Peek, Department of Agriculture, Geraldton mm.. KEYMESSAGES Self regenerating biserrula pastures grown in rotation with wheat were more profitable than volunteer pastures based on the assumption that the legume phase can lift wheat yields and improve grain quality... It was assumed that wheat grown in the first or second year after legume pasture would be higher in protein and attract the $10/tonne premium paid in the AH segregation...

Research is required to understand the question of temporal stability in patterns of spatial variation in grain protein... In the course of this project, a collaboration was established with Viterra which is interested in selective harvesting both as a means of gaining greater control over the characteristics of parcels of barley sent for malting, and also on the basis that a parcel of grain with a narrow range of variation in protein content is more highly regarded than one with a wide range... Given the poor performance of the protein sensors, these results do not disprove the concept either...
