A research project in the Great Southern region has demonstrated that the decision tool Yield Prophet could help local growers maximise crop yields and minimise risks associated with management decisions... "Following a number of extremely variable seasons, many growers in the region have lacked the confidence to implement management practices to maximise yields, and have been taking an approach of 'less risk' for their in-season decision making," Mr Whisson said... Mr Whisson said the benefit of Yield Prophet to local growers over the course of the season was obvious, especially when it came to making nitrogen and fungicide decisions based on forecast yield, as well as providing side benefits such as yield estimates for insurance purposes...

The aim of the project was to add value to the Agricultural Production Systems sIMulator (APSIM) tool by improving the underpinning science on which it is based... The ultimate impact of improving APSIM simulation accuracy is greater confidence in the outputs generated by APSIM... Of the eight wheat varieties assessed as part of this project, five of them have been adjusted in response to the phenology trial...

Recent collaborative research work investigating the decision-making tool Yield Prophet , supported by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), aimed to help Western Australian growers answer this question... Growers accessing information from the sites could easily identify crop progress during the season and adapt their logistics and applications ... According to a report compiled by DAFWA about the work in the Albany port zone, Yield Prophet is a moderately complex program for which new users require assistance, and growers probably need consultant support to get best value from it...

Three zones of contrasting soil types were identified for paddock 146A using EM38, grain yield and elevation data... Nitrogen was applied post emergence in large blocks (approx 40m x 100m) at three rates (20, 50 and 100kg/ha) with two replicates of each rate in each zone to wheat in 2004 and barley in 2005 and 2006... Grain yield (t/ha) P rate (kg/ha) Flat (heavy soil) Hill (light soil) 0 1.23 1.33 3 1.28 1.40 11 1.07 1.49 fertiliser rates in two zones, Yield increase (t/ha) needed the cost of the extra fertiliser 0.04 0.16..

"The level of understanding of the person setting up each tool will directly impact on how accurately the model replicates the real environment," South East Premium Wheat Growers Association (SEPWA) project officer Alice Butler said... "We found that the simple tools can be easily used by growers, but the more complex ones are consultant tools or require at least consultant and grower collaboration for a reliable and robust set-up.".. "To compare the options, SEPWA conducted a study in 2015 whereby growers at Mount Ney, Condingup, Neridup and Scaddan were set up with Yield Prophet , iPaddockYield, ProductionWise, Potential Yield CALculator (PYCAL) and N-rich Strips," she said...

Rural Management Strategies consultant Chris Minehan says using Yield Prophet and plant available water capacity mapping to manage nitrogen can be more profitable than applying a blanket rate... Recent research conducted by Rural Management Strategies in New South Wales has found that managing nitrogen separately across varying soil types using Yield Prophet and plant available water capacity (PAWC) mapping can be more profitable than applying a blanket rate of nitrogen due to savings in fertiliser costs... During the 2013 and 2014 winter cropping seasons, the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) funded trials at Barmedman to demonstrate the use of Yield Prophet and PAWC mapping to improve nitrogen decision-making in wheat and canola...
