The basic principles of yield forecasting are: understanding stored plant-available water at a given point in time; "likely" rain to come (eg, historical rainfall records and rainfall outlooks); and, "reading" the crop to understand what other factors apart from water may be limiting yield (for example plant density, tillers, weeds, disease, etc)... But for the farmer who wishes to better quantify target yields and look at other factors that may affect crop input decisions, then APSIM (as a subscriber to Yield Prophet) or PYCAL (available from Meredith Fairbanks, mfairbanks@agric.wa.gov.au ) may be of assistance...
