Advice concerning the significance and control of the more common pests, or potential pests, of these crops is presented... Value of the crop (high value crops cannot sustain too much damage as a small loss in yield or quality could mean a large financial loss), the cost of the spray and its application and the likely yield or quality benefit gained from control... Crop monitoring Ongoing monitoring of crops and surrounding vegetation is essential to determine the presence of both pests and predators, and when, if any, intervention is required to keep pests at an acceptable level or, if feasible, boost predator numbers by introducing them into the system...

Knockdown with Dichlorvos alone, applied to grain at in-loading (Table 1)... Dilute liquid concentrates in water at the specified rate per litre, then spray 1 litre of the mixture per tonne of grain while auguring the grain or spray 1 litre per 20 square metres of grain surface to control moths... The spray equipment must be calibrated to spray 1 litre of solution per tonne of grain...

The GRDC, through its Pathways to Regulation project (AKC00003), has recently been successful in progressing an industry-initiated label change through the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA)... The approval has allowed all registrants of paraquat to have their labels changed as an approved APVMA label ammendment... The reduction in withholding period from 14 days to 7 days for some paraquat herbicides on some labels will be good news for pulse growers - particularly lentil growers who intend to crop-top prior to harvest...

Early leaf spot: brown spots on upper (left) and lower (right) leaf surfaces some showing a yellow halo around the spot... Leaves fall off and stems and pegs are weakened if the epidemic starts early, is uncontrolled and weather conditions favour disease spread... Leaves must be wet from rain, dew or irrigation for long periods to trigger infections...

GrAin fumiGATiOn - A Guide in order to kill grain pests at all stages of their life cycle (egg, larva, pupa, adult), phosphine gas needs to reach, and be maintained at, a concentration possible only in a gas-tight storage... The total time required for effective fumigation ranges from 10-17 days, accounting for the minimum exposure period, ventilation and withholding period... To control pests at all life stages and prevent insect resistance, phosphine gas concentration needs to reach 300 parts per million (ppm) for seven days (when grain is above 25 C) or 200ppm for 10 days (between 15-25 C)...
