Significant reductions in crop yield can occur in some varieties of winter crops from selective herbicides applied at the recommended rate of application... A trial was undertaken to investigate the effects of speed of travel at sowing, row spacing, seeding depth and covering method on the tolerance of Diamondbird wheat to three IBS herbicides... Trials were undertaken to investigate the effects of some of the variables associated with sowing...

Hot dry conditions exacerbate crown rot threat.. "This year many crops have simply run short of stored moisture and plants have had to expend additional energy to uptake limited moisture for grain fill from a greater depth in the soil... The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) advises growers to assess crown rot risk by checking for browning of the stem base or by taking soil and stubble samples for analysis...

Map showing locations of growers for Ground Cover series following their seasons.. With parents Ross and Michele, and brother Kieran and his wife Elly, they grow wheat, barley, canola and linseed, trade store lambs and finish them on lucerne-based pastures... With parents Jeff and Tina, uncle and aunt Brent and Jan, cousin Adam and wife Karina, they crop wheat, barley, canola, lupins and wheaten hay...

We focused on the N 2 O emissions associated with the growth of annual legume species, the subsequent breakdown of their residues, and the uptake of their residual nitrogen by a following wheat crop... Results from the project ranged from 0.08% to 0.59% using fluxes calculated by a non-linear interpretation of gas concentration data, and slightly less using a simpler linear regression approach... The losses measured at this time were comparable with those measured under similar conditions in winter, but where there was twice the rate of fertiliser N applied, the potential for N 2 O losses appears to be much higher in the summer period...

Pulses can be utilised to control weeds, through green manuring, crop topping and good cultural practices... There is an increasing interest in pulses to provide a cheaper and more reliable source of N, and with brown manuring to maximise this benefit... The role and management of pulses in a southern NSW farming systems largely revolves around the individual needs of the farm, either to supply nitrogen, control weeds, harvest for grain, or a combination of all...

For much of the last two decades, they have been managed in-crop, predominantly using Group A herbicides... In recent years it has become clear that herbicide resistant wild oats are becoming a key threat to a sustainable northern farming system... 1. No significant rate response was obtained by increasing the rate of Triflur Xcel or Avadex Xtra in the mixture..

Access to at least 60cm of subsoil moisture is a must if farmers are considering planting mung beans as a break crop this summer... "Their ability to fit into a short period of growing time is legendary," he said... Mr McIntosh urged farmers to do their research before planting, ensuring they have stored sub-soil moisture, and checking whether their soils have any constraints such as sodium or chloride, or any hard pans that may restrict root development...

Growers urged to count the yield cost of wide rows.. Winter cereal growers in the northern region are being urged to carefully assess the yield cost of their row spacing decisions... Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) supported trials by NSW DPI researchers at the Tamworth Agricultural Institute and the Condobolin Agricultural Research & Advisory Station in 2009 and 2010 found that yield loss from 30 cm to 40 cm row spacings averaged approximately 0.3 tonnes/hectare but varied from less than 0.2 up to 0.8 t/ha...
