After the plants have grown for 18 weeks, the nematodes are extracted from the soil and roots, and counted under a microscope to determine which plant lines have reduced nematode multiplication... Root-lesion nematodes (RLN) are considered most likely endemic to the Fertile Crescent region in the Middle East where wheat originated some 8,000 years BCE. From there, RLN probably spread around the world with grain cultivation across North Africa, Europe, America, and finally Australia... "We realised the resistances that aren't available in commercial wheats, do exist in their ancient ancestors," says Professor John Thompson, Crop Nematologist at University of Southern Queensland' who supervises the GRDC-funded wheat pre-breeding program into genetic options for RLN control...

Although a high-risk crop, oaten hay has the potential to outperform all other cereals with respect to gross margins... The widespread use of genetic analysis in agriculture is limited by economic factors... In the short term, fungicides used at seeding (seed dressings or applied in-furrow with fertiliser) and foliar fungicide sprays will mitigate risk and minimise losses...

Canola sown at Pindar as part of the GRDC RCSN early sowing trials in 2015... Trials in Western Australia's northern agricultural region have shown that if growers want to take advantage of very early (early April) germination opportunities in this region, they will require a range of variety maturity choices to achieve the best yields... Of the six wheat varieties trialled in 2015, at sites near Pindar and Yuna, the slow-maturing ForrestA variety had the highest yields of 4 to 4.2 tonnes per hectare when sown early on 9 April at Yuna...

One or more species of RLN (Root Lesion Nematode, Pratylenchus spp.) occur in at least 60% of WA cropping paddocks... The principal outputs of this project will be knowledge of wheat varieties which are more resistant to RLN (i.e. limit the multiplication of RLN under a crop) & more tolerant to RLN (i.e. yield loss incurred in a variety due to RLN is minimised)... RLN research in WA will continue to focus on management, principally through rotational recommendations for the deployment of cereal cultivars (& other host crops) with a level of resistance to each RLN that will benefit subsequent crop yields...

GRDC calls for grower help with BYDV project.. The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) is calling for grower assistance in identifying the strains of Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV) present in the key cropping areas of New South Wales and Queensland... For transporting, tillers should be shortened back to approximately 30cm including the base then wrapped in moist newspaper (identifying which is diseased), and posted to: Dr Mark Schwinghamer, Agronomy and Soil Science, University of New England, NSW 2351...

Rotate barley crops with non-hosts such as wheat (to control foliar pathogens), legumes or summer crops; avoid sowing barley on barley and maintain clean fallows... The main foliar diseases of barley are leaf spots, rusts and powdery mildew... Barley is tolerant to root-lesion nematode infection and is a good winter cropping option in infested areas...
