Low drought induced irrigation allocations and low winter and spring rainfalls over the last five years have led to farmers using water to irrigate wheat and other winter crops for survival in spring... The only growers able to target 8 tonnes have been the bore pumpers in the Hillston and Darlington Point district who have achieved crops with 8-10t/ha yields... Although the 8 tonne system uses more water at 685mm compared to the one spring irrigation at 420mm the gross margin per megalitre is higher...

"Growers often select a crop based on price projections but GRDC-supported research over a long period of time shows the benefits and value of crop diversity, particularly cereals following nitrogen-fixing legumes," Ms O'Keeffe said... The concept ties neatly into the new GRDC focus on research themes including 'Profitable Farming Systems' that aims to help growers design a farm system with the flexibility to adapt and respond to changes; manage risk; integrate new practices; and ultimately generate more profit, Ms O'Keeffe said...

Evidence from field and laboratory studies show some wheat varieties perform better in these conditions, due to differences in the chemistry of root exudates/residues which influence rhizo-bacteria populations... Field and intact core experiments in 2007 and 2008 in a previous GRDC experiment showed strong evidence that rotating varieties influenced the yield of wheat on wheat systems the responses were much greater in 2007 than 2008... Alongside the field and intact core experiments, laboratory experiments with biotechnology tools (DNA-based) are being used to follow the soil and rhizosphere biology over time in different soils to understand the wheat on wheat environment over two complete years...
