Through a national series of 40 trials and 20 Soil 2 Grain workshops, this project generated a series of guidelines on the tactical use of agrichemicals and nitrogen (N) in cereals during stem elongation... Disease management outputs included the construction of a green leaf duration calculator for making better fungicide decisions, management guidelines for the use of foliar fungicides to control stem rust in wheat, stripe rust control in wheat varieties with adult plant resistance (APR) and powdery mildew in barley... Using a conservative 5% uptake (based on losses estimated by Murray & Brennan of crops with powdery mildew in WA and leaf rust susceptible barley in the northern region) these guidelines could increase margins by an estimated $5 million/year...

Creating superior crown rot resistance in wheat is the aim of Queensland scientists at the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF), based at the Leslie Research Facility in Toowoomba... Scientists from DAFF showcased their crown rot resistance research to national and international scientists, and representatives from Australia's Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), at Toowoomba in October, 2012... The field tour was held at the Leslie Research Facility and the DAFF Wellcamp site, followed by a two-day laboratory workshop to demonstrate the department's leading scientific methods...

While commercial varieties of bread wheat and durum wheat with adequate levels of crown rot resistance are not available, other wheats carrying a level of resistance or tolerance to this disease have been identified... The markers will be used as flags to detect the presence of resistance genes in populations of wheat plants derived from crosses between resistant lines and elite varieties... Readily detected genetic markers are identified that indicate the presence of genes that resist growth of, or provide tolerance to crown rot disease...

The frost protection mechanisms used by a species of grass in the same family as wheat may give scientists a mechanism with which to improve wheat"s frost tolerance... Another research team, led by associate professor Grant Daggard at the Centre for Rural and Environmental Biotechnology (CREB) at the University of Southern Queensland, is exploring novel ways of introducing frost tolerance into wheat plants... Given the difficulty in identifying variation for frost resistance within wheat, Dr Daggard"s group has introduced new genes into wheat plants, including one that produces an "antifreeze" protein that is active in the transformed plants...

Stay-green wheat may weaken drought's grip.. Stay-green was discovered in wheat more than 25 years ago, but the traits are only now becoming accessible to breeders through the development of molecular markers, the details of which will be published this year... Stay-green in plants can be determined by a range of underlying mechanisms, several of which facilitate increased water availability after flowering, such as small canopy size at flowering, increased moisture uptake after flowering, increased nitrogen uptake during grain-fill and increased nitrogen in leaves...

The research that I will undertake in my PhD program aims to understand how legume break crops can mobilise P for the following wheat crop... We proposed that surplus mobilised P, resulting from the root activity of the companion break crop, would be scavenged and taken up by the inter-mingled wheat roots... The companion plants of chickpea, white lupins and field pea significantly increased P uptake by wheat (Figure 1) when the roots of both the wheat and the pulse were grown together, compared to when the wheat roots grew separated from those of the legume crop...

The aim is to answer the question: By how much will my current cropping sequence promote or decrease nematode populations The process of understanding the sympathetic and antagonistic interactions of crops and nematodes in the northern grain region will also provide information to answer the broader question... It is intended that this approach combining the use of modelling and the efficiency frontier will help evaluate and inform individual farmer decisions and enable testing of decisions beyond the seasons experienced during the project...
