Field experiments were at weed-free sites, with comparison of yields from areas sprayed with registered herbicides at the recommended and double rates and untreated control areas for each cultivar... Not all cultivars were included in each field trial... Significant yield reductions at the recommended rate were recorded for the following herbicides and cultivars: Bromicide 200 - Binalong, 11% in 1 of 4 trials; Gilbert, 10% in 1 of 3 trials; Grimmett, 13% in 1 of 4 trials...

Blade, Kite, EGA Eagle Rock, and Sloop SA barley showed tolerance to metribuzin, exhibiting little change in seedling density and anthesis dry matter (DM) when treated with metribuzin (187.5 and 375 g/ha)... Estimates of regression parameter B (slope s.e.) for seedling density (plants/m2) and shoot DM (g/m2) of wheat genotypes treated with metribuzin (0, 187.5, and 375 g/ha) at a eld site at Cleve in 2004 Two-tailed t-tests were performed to compare differences in B (slope) values with Spear, a sensitive genotype... There is a need to identify alternative sources of metribuzin tolerance, which can be incorporated into Australian wheats...

Recent changes to wheat breeding in Australia has seen the release of a number of new varieties in Western Australia... Information will be packaged to provide a detailed picture of individual varieties and will be presented in a timely way using grower groups, web based systems and publications to ensure maximum coverage and early adoption of new information... The project has allowed DAFWA to evaluate new wheat varieties over a range of conditions in order to assess their suitability as replacements for existing wheat varieties...

The barley and wheat cultivars bred for the Northern Region are routinely tested for their tolerance to herbicides in three stages... Prior to release and commercialisation, the cultivars are screened with six standard herbicides; Ally, 2,4-D, Glean, MCPA LVE, Starane and Tordon242 for wheat; and Achieve, Ally, 2,4-D, MCPA LVE, Starane and Tordon242 for barley... The paper presents the results on the herbicide tolerance of the new barley and wheat cultivars that have been released in the last five years...

Of the three rust diseases affecting wheat crops, leaf rust is often overlooked because it is thought to be less damaging than stem rust and stripe rust... The new pathotype found in WA last year has a DNA fingerprint identical to isolates of the '76 group' from eastern Australia, clearly showing it has spread from east to west in Australia... Some wheat varieties, such as King Rock , Fortune and Zippy , have additional leaf rust resistance that is expected to remain effective, meaning a lesser shift in their resistance ratings from moderately resistant (MR) to MS. LongReach Cobra , Mace and Carnamah varieties have shown varying responses to the new pathotype, so further tests are underway to more accurately determine how they might react...

Although fungicides can control rust, genetic resistance remains the most environmentally acceptable and economical means of rust control in Australia... Northern region grain growers are being reminded to consider adult plant resistance (APR) to fungal diseases such as stem, stripe and leaf rust, when retaining seed this harvest for next year's crop... As news of the first cereal rust outbreaks in southern Australia reach the University of Sydney's Plant Breeding Institute (PBI), northern region growers are reminded to be vigilant in crop monitoring this season...
