During the first field trip (August 2), Prof Tuberosa visited three different experimental sites near Adelaide where a number of new experimental materials were being evaluated alongside already released varieties... During the second field trip (August 22), he visited three different farms where durum is grown and an experimental site where new materials were being evaluated for their agronomic performance... As a member of the steering and program committee of InterDrought-III (October 10-14, 2009, Shanghai, China,) and in view of the strong interest in drought-related research at ACPFG, the inclusion of Prof Mark Tester in the scientific committee of InterDrought-III has been suggested...

For example the spill-ins with germplasm arise through our collaborations in wheat and pulses with the publically-funded centres like CIMMYT, ICARDA and ICRISAT, and in canola we have an excellent example in the private sector with Canola Breeders WA and.. Falling public investments now are a worry, especially as our private ones in R and D are low (but increasing somewhat)... Recruitment and education of new agricultural scientists and farm decision makers is an important part of competitiveness, something about which time doesn't permit more discussion, except to say I think WA does pretty well at this...

CSIRO has a long track record of making major on-going investment into the genetic improvement of wheat varieties and their agronomy to ensure they fit the target requirements for both the main wheat belt and the High Rainfall Zones of Australia... Underpinning the development of the traits provided to Australian breeders are a series of basic technologies that we are applying to our work... We outline the state of current research efforts supported by public funds (CSIRO, GRDC) with particular emphasis being given to developments that we believe will assist plant breeders in Australian breeding companies to deliver new high quality, well adapted productive wheats that have the ability to counter major constraint factors...

Location should be an important consideration in wheat varietal selection for growers in the northern region cropping belt... Dr Martin said the research has found that varieties generally flower in the same order across years and sowing times, but there are some important exceptions... Suntop is a variety that seems to behave differently in the northern environments in that it is a couple of days earlier than Gregory in places like Wagga and Narrabri, but when you get up into Central Queensland it can be 10 days, and in one experiment 20 days, earlier than Gregory ," Dr Martin said...

Caption 1: CSIRO's GRDC-funded early sowing of wheat trial site at Wickepin last year shows a range of plant development rates dependent on time of sowing and use of long, mid or short maturing variety... But the risks can be reduced by using suitable varieties and tools such as modern no-tillage techniques, summer fallow management and more cost-effective insecticides and fungicides to protect against pests and diseases... This year's NVT trial data includes more detail about wheat variety performance across several years in a range of environments...

His trials at Dalwallinu, Merredin and Mullewa in 2012 and 2013 demonstrated that some wheat varieties could establish well when sown to a depth of 70-100mm... But establishment across all sites was reduced by between 17 and 61 per cent with deep sowing, compared to establishment from a sowing depth of 50mm (especially in varieties with short coleoptiles and on loamy soil)... At the North Miling site, establishment was similar for shallow (28mm) and 'normal' (52mm) sowing depths, but deep sowing to a depth of 119mm reduced establishment by between 22 and 45 per cent for a range of wheat varieties...

Webcast heralds new age for industry debate.. The panel, chaired by the national editor of ABC Rural, Leigh Radford, and including GRDC managing director John Harvey, discussed how breeding could overcome the 'tough nuts' facing Australia's wheat growers - frost, drought and protection from disease... The rodent panel included three members of the National Mouse Management Working Group - Dr Rohan Rainbow (GRDC manager crop protection), Dr Simon Humphrys (commercialisation manager, Invasive Animals Cooperative Research Centre) and Andrew Polkinghorne (South Australian Mouse Working Party) - and addressed an increase in mouse numbers in an area covering more than a fifth of south-east Australia's cropping area...

On Wednesday 24 August the Grains Research & Development Corporation (GRDC) will host the broadcast, which will be streamed on the internet to prominent wheat growing locations in Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland... "The web broadcast will allow growers to ask their own questions of the panel and give feedback to the GRDC which is a really exciting opportunity," Mr Harvey said... The environment for wheat breeding has changed and GRDC no longer invests grower levies in commercial breeding, but invests in pre-breeding in areas that target growers' commercial priorities, such as tolerance to drought, frost and salinity and disease resistance," he said...
