To evaluate yield and competition with weeds of new wheat cultivars selected by recurrent selection for early vigour compared to common commercial cereal cultivars... Ten ryegrass heads per sample were measured for head length... The research has shown that under weedy situations, UA47 yielded 30% more than Wyalkatchem and halved the ryegrass seed set compared to ryegrass growing in Wyalkatchem plots...

Stewart Hamilton, pictured with his workmate Wal, looks to the family's hay enterprise for weed control... Stewart Hamilton says that growing hay - field peas, ryegrass and oats - as a break crop in sequence with their grain crops has allowed them to eliminate almost all weeds from infested paddocks, lifting whole-farm productivity and profitability... Stewart says that using this approach when faced with a dry start to the season has improved germination in their hay crops, which, apart from boosting hay yields, has also helped to further smother weed competition...

Caution urged for weather damaged grain.. Grain growers experiencing adverse weather this harvest are urged to ensure that, where possible, the grain they retain for 2013 crop seed has a sufficiently high 'falling number' value... Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) western grower services manager Darren Hughes encouraged growers to pay particular attention to which grain they kept for crop seed, saying weather damaged grain was more susceptible to poor germination, low vigour and degradation during storage and handling...

Bespoke machinery tailored to individual farms.. For Victorian grower Stewart Hamilton, a seeder demonstration day that his family recently hosted has highlighted the increasing focus on machinery adaptation matched to individual farming systems... The Horwood Bagshaw seeder draws on about 20 per_cent less horsepower compared with their previous seeder...

Compete with weeds give your crop heaven and your weeds hell.. Paired row sowing achieved using the Stiletto boot in this trial, has the potential to improve grain yield and competition with weeds... The stiletto boots used in this research creates paired rows, 75mm apart, effectively reducing the row spacing by 75mm...

New barley cultivars are evaluated within the NVT system across regions, under a limited range of management practices... The results suggest that varieties are more likely to differ in their yield and quality response to management factors such as nitrogen rate, sowing date, and harvest date more frequently than seeding rate and sowing depth... Lodging and head loss were measured at each harvest date and physical tests were conducted on grain samples from each plot...

Mace has rapidly become the dominant variety in WA for a number of very good reasons and is unlikely to be displaced in the immediate future... Data was sorted by Agzone (see Shackley et al 2012 for map of Agzones of WA), previous crop, subsoil pH, and/or sowing date to look for any specific adaptation of any of the newer varieties compared to Wyalkatchem or Mace... Recent research has also shown that the Spear type wheats (especially Yitpi) are slightly less susceptible to frost damage at flowering than Wyalkatchem types (Ben Biddulph pers...

Weeds compete against crops for valuable moisture, light and nutrients, but growers can take steps in coming weeks to help their wheat crops fight back and stop the weeds winning... Mr Newman said the seed size of wheat varieties varied considerably and growers should take this into account when calculating seeding rates and plant density... "In the eighth year of using this practice, these growers had no ryegrass in their focus paddocks and have averaged fewer than 1.5 ryegrass plants per square metre ever since," Mr Newman said...
