Overall, 60-70 per cent of flour is used in traditional flat breads, 20-25 per cent of flour is used in western style breads and 5-10 per cent is used in cakes and biscuits... In summary, canola varieties sown 2-3 weeks earlier than normal (early to mid April) can be grazed in winter prior to bud elongation (usually providing 600-800 dse grazing days/ha) and recover with no impact on yield or oil...

A national network of demonstration sites, co-ordinated by key farm groups (owned and driven by farmers) in each State working in conjunction with State Agencies and CSIRO, will examine new and alternative strategies for farmers in the Australian broadacre wheat/sheep zone to mitigate the negative effects and capitalise on the opportunities of climate change on their production systems... The farm groups are uniquely situated to, not only demonstrate new practices, but also to bring awareness of the impacts of climate change and adaptations required to ensure continuing farm viability... Farmers in the dryland wheat-sheep zone will have greater awareness of the likely impacts of climate change on their production systems and are in a better position to develop practices which mitigate the likely negative impacts of climate change on their enterprise viability...

The farm groups are uniquely situated to, not only demonstrate new practices, but also to bring awareness of the impacts of climate change and adaptations required to ensure continuing farm viability... The approach will test a series of climate change adaptation options in experimental field conditions and enable the effective modeling of the outcomes of the demonstrations on farm income and risk management... " Managing nutrition on soils that have been treated for water repellence by cultivation.. A comparison of N uptake at 10 N and 50 N showed significant increases in N uptake in the nil and banded wetter though not in mouldboard and spading... The results suggest that soil nitrogen is more available in the mouldboard and spading treatments than in the nil and banded wetter...

Polymers probed in novel non-wetting research.. Image of non-wetting soils in WA. Photo taken by Stephen Davies, DAFWA.. "We're aiming to get a better understanding of how chemical surfactants interact with organic molecules and the soil, and how we can improve these products so water can be absorbed quickly by the soil," he said...

The use of a mouldboard plough with a skimmer attached, that fully inverts the soil to bury weed seeds from on or near the surface to a depth of 15 cm or more, would result in a dramatic reduction of seedling emergence for the majority of weed species... Crop Updates is a partnership between the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia and the Grains Research & Development Corporation 282.. We still have many years ahead of growers experiencing the hardships of resistant weed management before they turn the corner and get on top of the problem...

Grower adoption and implementation of strategies to manage soil water repellence in farming systems.. No detailed time-series soil surveys have been conducted to confirm the perception that water repellence is increasing the expression of the constraint is easier to diagnose than most because of the obvious nature of the impacts on establishment, water infiltration and variable soil wetting... The grower intends to continue mouldboard ploughing and using the paired row seeder which is also a good implement for seeding ploughed areas...
