PAP signals a survival advantage during water deficit in Arabidopsis plants During 2010 I have continued working towards my PhD, researching the molecular and biochemical mechanisms plants use to adapt to low water availability and drought... In our research group we have been studying a subtle mutation in Arabidopsis (a close relative of Canola) that may have important implications for drought resistance in many crops... The focus of my research is to determine if and how this chemical assists plants to adapt to water deficit or confer drought tolerance...

The main recommendation from this project is that promising results from the 2010 season warrant continued support in the ongoing project DAW00215... 2. Workshop hosted at Merredin MEF, 22nd Sept 2010 During the 2010 season, a national workshop was organised in September at the Merredin Managed Environment Facility to help facilitate discussion about the development of projects and to allow potential project managers the opportunity to view the facilities offered at Merredin... Sowing opportunities were assessed for each day in the sowing season based on PASW% of seedbed [0-100mm depth] or topsoil [0-200mm depth]... Seedling performance was assessed for each sowing opportunity by counting the days between germination (dry sown) or sowing (moist sown) and July 19 when seedlings were exposed to lethal or disabling topsoil [0-200mm] conditions ( Table 1 )... In 50% of years the first opportunity occurs before early May and 10 days of sowing will have been achieved by early June ( Table 3 )...

Farming 260 hectares at Yalca in northern Victoria, the Thorntons grow maize over summer, as well as wheat, barley, canola and faba beans over winter, all under surface irrigation... Ray works on average yields of 12 tonnes/ha for maize and says plant population is "king" in achieving yield targets... In August, Ray will spray weeds and in September will use the strip tiller to band phosphorus at 7 to 8cm and nitrogen at nearly 30cm below the soil surface, then sow maize later with a 'pop-up' or starter fertiliser...

The Merredin MEF is being used to screen bread wheat for traits that protect from early water stress.. Overall, two experiments were run in 2012... "In the experiment, the lines that suffered the least loss of dry matter production during the water deficit period were the lines with the highest vigour from the CSIRO wheat population provided by Dr Rebetzke," Dr French says...

SARDI Senior Research Officer, Lachlan Lake (left), and Associate Professor Victor Sadras are looking at ways to improve drought and heat stress tolerance in field peas and chickpeas... Four years ago, the team of Associate Professor Victor Sadras from the South Australian Research & Development Institute began looking at ways to improve drought and heat stress tolerance in field peas, which began with mapping the risk of drought in Australia and its different forms... Management should be to have good growing conditions prior to flowering...
