The focus of the paper is on this latter category, where inputs are varied according to within-paddock spatial variation and spatial information is used to improve decision-making and management... A snapshot of the current status of PA adoption is presented using available data on variable rate fertiliser management and yield mapping across regions... A snapshot of current adoption The results presented in Table 1 capture just two aspects of precision agriculture on a national scale that includes 5 selected SA regions (see report cited below for further details)...

Moisture retention and VRT paying off for Egans.. To improve their profitability and productivity, Scaddan growers Gavin and Elaine Egan pay keen attention to summer weed control and in recent seasons have introduced variable-rate technology (VRT) for application of inputs... In 2012, the Egans returned to a blanket rate in their fertiliser applications after a hailstorm at the end of 2011 wiped out most of their cereals, leaving little harvest data for the yield mapping on which VRT applications are based...

Rural Management Strategies consultant Chris Minehan says using Yield Prophet and plant available water capacity mapping to manage nitrogen can be more profitable than applying a blanket rate... Recent research conducted by Rural Management Strategies in New South Wales has found that managing nitrogen separately across varying soil types using Yield Prophet and plant available water capacity (PAWC) mapping can be more profitable than applying a blanket rate of nitrogen due to savings in fertiliser costs... During the 2013 and 2014 winter cropping seasons, the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) funded trials at Barmedman to demonstrate the use of Yield Prophet and PAWC mapping to improve nitrogen decision-making in wheat and canola...
