Sir Gill says short answers of 20-25 seconds are effective, which I believe is an excellent technique when being interviewed by news journalists as it fits the "grab" length they would want for their bulletins... Rather than use the report to outline some of the traditional methods used by PR professionals such as holding press conferences and writing releases, I will instead look at some of the other approaches around the world to deliver the message of agriculture to the public...

Narrow-leafed lupin (Lupinus angustifolius) originates from the Mediterranean region and has become the largest grain legume crop in Australia due to its adaptation to infertile sandy soils, reasonable tolerances to diseases and pests and its use as a break crop... Lupins are used mainly for animal feed markets but more recently interest has increased in its use in foods such as breads, noodles, sausages and other products... Narrow-leafed lupins are the largest and most important grain legume crop in Western Australia, but production has slumped, in part due to weed control challenges...

Soil phosphorus can be taken up by wheat roots directly or through beneficial arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF)... Professor Andrew Smith and his team, which includes Professor Sally Smith, Dr Maria Manjarrez-Martinez and Dr Ann McNeill from the University of Adelaide, are using this technique to demonstrate how important the contribution of mycorrhizas is to phosphorus nutrition and whether break crops can be used to maximise AMF populations... The research team established a field experiment at the beginning of this crop season to follow up and quantify the amount of phosphorus transferred by AMF. Results can also be used to measure the contribution of phosphorus uptake by wheat with different fertiliser applications and to inform new breeding strategies...

Powdery mildew survey seeks SA barley grower input South Australian barley growers are being urged to help in the fight against fungicide resistance by participating in a survey assessing resistance in the damaging barley disease, powdery mildew... Australian Research Centre for Necrotrophic Fungal Pathogens (ACNFP) director and GRDC western panel deputy chairman Richard Oliver said the samples would reveal fungicide resistance patterns, and help breeders produce new barley varieties resistant to powdery mildew... Professor Oliver said growers could protect barley crops from powdery mildew and limit the spread of resistant powdery mildew strains by controlling barley volunteers, growing barley varieties resistant to the disease and using effective fungicides.
